Radio active cat!

Our cat is due out in a week's time and I'm feeling quite anxious about the aftercare we've been told to follow.

I wondered if any others have experienced similar and what advice you could offer?

She is a very sociable, confident cat who is used to coming and going in and out whenever, lots of cuddles, sleeping with us on the bed etc.

Basically we need to avoid touching her, handling her things and anything she touches will rubber gloves and not let her outside for 8 days. She can't sit on us or next to us.

The radio is secreted in her saliva, kidneys and faeces so even touching her fur could be harmful.

We've bought a decent size dog crate but I can't envisage keeping her in this for 8 days solid!

We have a small, very open plan house which makes it all the more difficult.

We did ask the vet if she could stay in longer but they said they are at full capacity in the RI department and she can't stay anywhere else because she is radio active.

I have requested a tablet to make her more calm and docile so that will help.

Anyone who has dealt with the same do you have any hints or advice?

What are you talking about, has it had radiotherapy or something?

Do you have a bedroom that you can use for her for the 8 days? It might be easier than having her downstairs. Or even keep her shut in the bathroom. It might feel horrible, but then cats believe we are stupid at the best of times so she will only continue to think that you are very dim and will eventually learn how to open the bathroom door to let her out.

@BillywilliamV

Apologies - she had hyperthyroid, the treatment for which is radio iodine. It means the cat is radio active for weeks after.

@growinggreyer

The last time we did that she howled non stop and peed all over the carpet. Maybe the tablet will calm her down though. I'm not worried about the carpet as such as it needs replacing anyway - I just don't to cause her any unnecessary stress. Usually when she's been away from home she gets spoiled and cuddled a lot to make up but this is not an option!

I think we will at least try it, though.

Poor kitty. She will be glad when you can give her a big cuddle. Let's hope the medication helps keep her calm.

@growinggreyer

Your comment about her thinking we are too stupid to open the door made me laugh!!Grin You are right, I am thinking about it from my perspective no hers and she would definitely have THAT face on!

I can recommend Nutracalm from your local vet. You don't need a loading dose so it will be effective straight away.

Maybe some of the True Hemp calming cat treats too.

Good luck
