Hello. Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this? Full story below.

I’ve never had cats, grew up with a dog. Partner grew up with cats and dogs, animals are always drawn to him, animals are always quite reserved with me for some reason.

We moved in our current house 2.5 years ago, a small cat/ large kitten was hanging around our garden, friendly little thing, always wanted stroking. Looked a bit under weight, furr was not in great condition.

Fast forward a couple of weeks, cat was meowing outside our house in the early hours of the morning to come in. To confirm, we never fed her or let her in.

Fast forward a really long story, we found out she lived in the next street with 3 other cats and 3 dogs... owner was going to give her to cats protection, (apparently she was a nightmare) so we adopted her instead.

She’s a great cat, she was only 18 months at the time. She’s now 4 years old, I couldn’t have asked for a better cat to say I’ve never owned one. Really loving, obedient most of the time! When we adopted her we found out she had never been to the vets, so we made sure she had all her injections, we keep up to her flea treatments and she gets checked every 6 months.

However the only issue is she just constantly licks her self, if she’s not outside, she’s grooming, in between her cat napping, she’s grooming. She’s had some tests and nothing seems to be wrong with her, she now has a lovely soft coat, it actually feels like silk, and she’s got soooo much furr!

I’m wondering if it’s a form of post traumatic stress from her previous owner? But if so, how can I stop this? It’s honestly obsessive to the point where I can’t stand to hear her lick any longer! I feel sorry for her to be honest, the noise actually wakes me up in the night. Any suggestions please?

You have done a good thing giving her a loving and caring home. I think as long as she’s not getting sore patches and fur loss it isn’t too much of a problem. If her fur is in great condition she can’t be doing any harm. It is mainly annoying for you! Cat’s do groom a lot but maybe your’s is a bit obsessive about it.
Do you think she could be bored, does she need more stimulation, new cat toys to give her other things to focus on? Does she go outdoors?

Do you have other things for her to do including scratching posts?

@Yummyplainscones & @SpearmintPeppermint - Thanks for your replies.

Because she was our first pet together and because I'm a huge softy, she has so many toys! My partners parents have 3 cats and even they dont have many toys as my one cat does. We have even tried to play with her more due to working from home and she plays for about 5 minutes then gets bored and walks off haha. She has all sorts!

She loves to go outside, she's always playing with the other cats in the street which is nice, sometimes they scrap too! She's got the life of riley here haha so I really am struggling to understand why she's so obsessive. Her fur really is beautiful and our families always comment on it.

Does she have scratching posts in particular though?

She needs at least one that allows her to stretch up to her full height.
