she's only 12

she would never normally let this happen.

Is it just her age do you think.

Diet unchanged and poos normal.

senility is the obvious one to consider (I know several people this has happened to) - worth a trip to the vet - a sedative might be in order

themoon66 · 08/10/2007 22:18

Oh dear, poor you. My old labrador started doing this around age 13. She was so upset about it that I couldn't bear to tell her off

fishie · 08/10/2007 22:18

go to vet. it might be easily sorted.

my dog really lost control and still lasted a few weeks before errm the end.

brimfull · 08/10/2007 22:20

So it is the beginning of the end then...shit!

What do you mean a sedative-she sleeps all day as it is.DO you mean incase she's distressed?

no! sorry left out crucial info there. my dog had heart murmur for years and then full on heart failure, he couldn't get up at the end hence pooing self.

ggirl it will probably be expensive but fine. at worst you will find out what is the matter and how to mitigate it.

brimfull · 08/10/2007 22:28

she hates the vets though(as all dogs do I suppose)
wouldn't really want her to have to have anything done like blood test or anything invasive.

My dc's will be devastated.

Good luck from me too.

How is she, have you spoken to the vet yet? My dog had this last winter, she'd go through phases of pooing in the house and then be ok again. We tried 2 different senility drugs and 2 different arthritus treatments (was thought she might not be going outside because squatting hurt her joints). Nothing seemed to make much difference and she did this on and off all winter. In spring we got a puppy and she only did it once after we got him. I think he gave her a new lease of life and the warmer weather probably helped too. She kept going well all summer but had to be put down a few weeks ago, her arthritus got worse and she started collapsing. So for her it was the begining of the end, but she had a whole 10mths from starting pooing in the house to being PTS. It wasn't too bad to deal with and did get better at times. BTW I'm not saying go and get a puppy, unless you want too, but she may pull through, it could just be a phase. Good luck with her, I feel for you, its hard when our pets get old.

ThreadyKrueger · 09/10/2007 12:53

If arthritis is making it painful for her to squat she might well 'hold on' and then get caught short indoors. My old spinone got a little bit like this.

There are treatments that can reduce the pain of arthritis and slow its progression. That might help.

Well it's either a back/neural problem or canine senility or a bit of both.
She's been prescribed a weeks course of anti-inflammatories to see if that helps.
Anyway.no poo in house yet today .
Thanks for asking after her though

vet said she may have another yr in her or it could be months depends on if this drug helps I suppose.

He did mention x-rays which I (and he) are loathe to do.
