Dog attack on baby

So just been having a conversation with partner, he says that if our dog was to ever bite our baby and she was to die straight away right in front of our eyes it's illegal for us to kill the dog? You have to ring the police on the dog and then they will do lids of tests on the dog to show to the courts that it's a dangerous dog so that they can kill it ?! And if we did kill the dog we would have to go to court and potentially go to prison ?

Is that even right? Like seriously! If our dog killed my baby instantly like that I'm sorry but I really don't think anyone would be ringing the police? My child ?! I would want the dog dead right there in front of me!

It is legal to humanely euthanise your own dog for any reason.

If killing the dog is necessary to stop an attack, of course nothing could come of it. It was a reasonable course of action.

In the circumstance that a baby had just been killed and the dog was killed in a manner not deemed humane, I doubt that police would prosecute you given the highly exceptional and emotional situation. Potentially if the method of killing was considered exceptionally and unnecessarily cruel, they might prosecute.

You wouldn't have to go through the courts to get the dog euthanised if it attacked. It is legal for a vet to put a dog down for any reason (or lack of reason), but they are also legally not obliged to put a dog down just because the owners want to. The police have to get a court order to have a dog put down, but as the owner, you do not.

I'm not to sure but yeah either way I wouldn't risk it. The amount of times I've seen cases where dogs have..... even a 10 year old....has shocked me. A lot of people say Naah our dog would never do that...but you never know...why risk it...
