Can I give my dog Zantac/Ranitidine? Any veterinary people about?

Our dog has had overproduction of stomach acid in the past, but has not been troubled for a couple of years - so we have no medication for this.

He has been vomiting today, mostly bile, but managing to eat his meals (while retching!). Unfortunately his tea came back up and he has just been sick again. He is more unwell than we have ever seen him - can't settle, obviously in discomfort. Can we give him antacids for humans? If so how much? He is just a small dog.
Anybody?

Looks like it can be given to dogs but usually as directed by a vet. Doses are in the link.

You really need to get him to a vet if he is being that sick.
Yes it can be given to dogs but there are many reasons that vomiting happens and leaving him without a check up could be dangerous if there are other problems.

Thanks, Bg and TJ for your quick responses. I will take him to the vet but that will have to wait till Monday.

Didn't give him Zantac in the end. I note from the website, TJ, that stomach acid can come when kidneys fail and I know that Shelties are prone to this. Something else to worry about, so the vet will definitely be consulted.

He was sick again in the night - just watery bile - but seems perkier this morning, nagging dh to take him out.

The medication he was on before was Antepsin, I think.

I've boiled some white rice for him - I know from experience that brown rice is too much for his bowels! Now the dilemma is: normally I would starve a sickie dog, but on the assumption that it is overproduction of acid, when does he get the rice? Usually he eats little and often to keep the acid in check.
