Blocked bladders are usually caused by crystals that form blockages. In many cases a catheter can be passed to relieve this. Depending how long they have been blocked the kidneys can get damaged too and may need support over the next few days. Worst case is total failure that can not be reversed but thankfully this is not that common. Recently blocked cats are more susceptible to it in the first few days and weeks post blockage as often there is inflammation involved that needs to settle. Watch the cat carefully for signs of it once he is home. Most cases can be managed longer term with special diets - your vet can advise you which ones they offer. These are really important to stick to or the chance of it happening again is very high.

Surgery is a last resort for cats that can not be unblocked with a catheter (occasional), or get recurrent blockages despite the diet (unusual). In those cases there is sadly no alternative option that I have ever seen.

Hope your cat is going on ok. Let us know

There are dry and wet versions of the special diets so you should find one that suits the cat.

Often draining the bladder via a needle helps reduce the pressure on a blockage and sometimes then the catheter is easier to pass. At least with it drained the kidneys are able to continue to make urine and have no back pressure damaging them. Hopefully they also have given him antibiotics and anti-inflammatories too and these may help reduce the swelling around the blockage and may make it easier to get the catheter in too tomorrow.

Aimsmum - sorry to hear this, mt cat has had an operation twice to remove stones from his bladder, once was in London and it cost over £1000 but last time was here in Scotland and it only cost £200 as the vet knew excatly what she was going in for so it was a straight-forward open him up op, we had that decision as well at the time it was operate or put him down if it has been another £1000 we would have got him put down but we managed to get the £200 for him.

As others have said there is special diet food but they have to be on it for life and have no other food at all for it to work (at preventing the stones or crystals coming back) I have another 2 cats and it meant putting them all on special food which is £1 a small tin so that would be £6 a day we worked it out to be about £150 a month which we can't afford so he had the op, he's back with us (put back on all the weight he lost) and is on borrowed time until the next time when we will make the decision again

It's sad when it comes down to money but sometimes it's the harsh reality x

Sorry having read your post again I do think they are charging you way too much to open him up and remove the stones or crystals. I would ask them if it really needs to cost this much.

my parents had 2 male cats with this, the operation involved removing (cross your legs now) the external genitalia which leaves a bigger opening. It never seemed to bother them afterwards. They never had a special diet (long time ago) and lived to be in their late teens and 21.

this may sound odd but could you shop around vets at all?

with hindsight would that pet inusrance have helped?

Aimsmum - I understand now, my cat didn't have a blockage but had a stone embedded in his bladder wall which caused irritation and him to wee blood and feel the need to go all the time (including on the carpets ) the crystals are more common than this type of stones (trust him) so he needed the stone removed but chances are they will come back again it's a timebomb with him

I would give the PDSA a call you are in Glasgow if I remember right, I think theres one up Charing Cross somewhere next to the passport office, always worth a call to explain to them the situation.

If not you have done your best for him always remember that.

This is so sad, I'm really sorry about your cat. My cats are 8 now and I've never bothered with pet insurance but DD would be devastated if anything happened to either of them. Think I'll look into it.

spookykitty · 05/10/2007 23:06

Aimsmum - if he was very ill you did your best by him and I am sure he was spoiled when he was with you a lot of cats aren't so lucky, it is heartbreaking when you lose a pet so take care of yourself and your DD x

Aimsmum
I am sorry to butt in on your thread. But I am new to mumsnet and your post caught my eye. I had a female cat with similar problems (apparently worse in male cats. We had to have her put to sleep too, due to cost, and also suffering.

I am really sorry for you, I have three male cats now and they were my babies before my baby arrived. I hope you are ok and your DD is taking it ok??

You did the right thing.
