Good afternoon
Hoping to hear from a vet or anyone who has had a dog with kidney disease that’s been caught early. I have a 9 year old Labrador. He had an operation for a torn cruciate two years ago with a specialist. Whilst doing the blood tests they found he had kidney disease markers. Elevated creatine (I think) it was called. Plus some other tests I didn’t understand at all. They said he might or might not go on to get kidney disease.
He has no ill effects, if not for the leg op I’d never have known.
So far he’s had regular urine and blood tests & his blood pressure is monitored and he eats Hills prescription Kidney diet food, boiled egg white and veggies as treats and the situation is being monitored.
The vet has said he could have a kidney transplant, I cannot put him through that and very much doubt I could afford it. It’s not covered on the insurance as it’s now recorded as a pre existing condition.
He sleeps a lot and gets quite tired but he is overweight
which I try to keep under control by not over feeding him. He lost alot of weight attending actionpetz (a dog park) but it’s closed due to Covid.
My questions are:
Will I know if he’s being affected by this disease?
Is there any medication for kidney disease?
Is he in pain?
The tests cost around £200/300 each time, repeated every three months BUT they don’t seem to tell me anything apart from there some protein in the urine, creatine is elevated, blood pressure perfect. I know this already, why do they need to monitor so closely if there’s no treatment apart from a kidney transplant.
Is there anything else he can have to help?
He also suffers with arthritis, he can’t take medication as he has IBS and suffers badly with metacam etc
Thank you
