Any vets? Dog advice!

One of my dogs started random whimpering and yelping and cowering away from touch, she also started urinating in the house.

I took her to the vets, vet said she had pulled prodded poked and twisted to see where pain is coming from but could not get her to make a noise she put her on painkillers for 7days and adviced not to walk her atm as we don't know what's causing pain.

She finished the 7days on the painkillers and all signs of pain had disappeared, she started coming for fuss and moving about more but she started growling at the other dog which has now turned to attacking our other dog and she is still urinating inside.

We took her back and had urine and bloods done but tests both came back completely clear, and she is eating and drinking normally.

As for starting fights with the other dog we've just been told to be careful. She looks so sad all the time, she sits facing corners and just isn't herself.

I just want her to be back to her happy laid back self, she's gone from a placid lovely dog to one I'm having to crate to protect other dog and my children (she has not shown any aggression towards people but I worry that she might as she had never shown aggression towards other dogs until this week) it's not fair on her to be crated as much as she is, especially if she feeling unwell, and I feel so guilty but I need to protect others.

Sorry for the long post, not sure what to do next.

Oh god that sounds awful. Did they suggest scans of any sort as there something far wrong

TARSCOUT · 08/06/2020 10:27

What age is she?

Popandhop · 08/06/2020 10:43

We believe she is around 7, she was a rescue dog so age was a rough estimate, when we got her they believed her to be around 1year maybe 18months, no other suggestions from.vet other then to careful careful and watch her around other dog.

I don't know if I should give her a week and see if things improve, if I should take her to a different vet, if I should push for more test and if so what tests I should push for, other then urine and blood tests to check for uti, kidney failure arthritis ect.. I'm not 100% what else they checked such as teeth as I could not go in with her 🙁

I'd ask for a kidney scan and x-ray for arthritis

zenasfuck · 08/06/2020 10:55

She needs further investigation
I'd expect x rays and ultrasound to check for any liver/kidney impairment or foreign bodies

Then if no answers or improvement an mri to look for changes to the brain

What breed is the dog ?

Blackberrythief · 08/06/2020 10:57

I watch a lot of super vet (but am not a trained vet!) But I recall urinary incontinence coupled with pain when touched could be spinal issue (I remember a few dachshunds seem to have this issue). I would ask for xrays to be done if she is no better once off the pain killers. Urinary issues could also be bladder stones or UTI. The growling with other dogs is probably due to her being in pain and not wanting other dogs jumping over her. Good luck, I hope she feels better soon.

Popandhop · 08/06/2020 11:05

@zenasfuck She's a staffy x pug.i think I'm edging at it being something with the brain as she sits facing walls corners or puts her head behind objects like the sofa when lying down
Vet has already ruled out arthritis was the first thing they looked at,
Thank you to everyone for all the replies I was thinking of trying another vet but part of me was like if I do will they just tell me the same thing that they can't find anything, but you have reassured me that she needs more tests and I'm not being over cautious, something is definitely wrong.

My sisters staffs had a progressive genetic brain disease that came on when he was about 5, it was very sudden - has the vet checked fir anything like this ? Would be much easier if we could ask them what's wring 😢

FairfaxAikman · 08/06/2020 11:14

May I suggest trying a canine masseuse/physio?
My girl was having pain issues, it was clear from how she was holding herself but nothing showed up through the traditional vet route.

The physio picked up on some muscle damage in her flank from an old injury and after a few sessions she was vastly improved. It just wasn't the sort of thing the vet had been looking for.

I’m sorry to say that we had a friend with a pug who started staring at the wall and it was a brain tumour.

Popandhop · 08/06/2020 11:16

@notapizzaeater, she's had urine and bloods, couldn't go into vets with her so not sure what checks were physically done, all I know is they checked for uti arthritis and kidney issues, got a phone call to say urine and bloods came back completely clear no issues and to just keep an eye for a bit as she no longer seems to be in pain.

Got her booked into another vet for wednesday, fingers crossed, even if its something terrible I hope they figure it out so we can treat accordingly rather then it being left undetected.

It is possible that it is idiopathic vestibular disorder - it's more coomon in older dogs, but it can happen in younger ones. I've had two (very) old dogs who developed it, and some of what you are describing sounds very familiar, especially the facing the wall or lying in a corner. One test the vet taught me was whether the dog can walk backwards, ie. back out of a space without turning around. Neither of mine could. It affects their balance, which may not be noticeable in the early stages, but things like that show they don't have confidence in their balance.

Popandhop · 08/06/2020 11:38

@Moondust just tried this and she could walk backwards but very nervously and unsure about doing it and extremely slowly. I will ask vet about it, hopefully I will be able to say it properly 🤣 thank you.
