Not sure where to post this just wanting a bit if advice.

It looks like two young magpies have fallen from their nest into our garden so we currently have two young magpies hopping round the garden. They cannot fly. I have gave them a bowl of water. But our main concern is we have a dog he tried chasing one yesterday as we didnt know they were there at that point. We told the dog to come away and be did so.

What should we do? Does anyone know?

Are their parents still around?

TARSCOUT · 28/05/2020 09:09

If you can't keep dog out area for a week or so just pop it back in its nest and hope for the best.

There is two now and i think the nest is in the conifers quite high up. Should i try placing them as near to the nest? Feel so sorry for them

Are the adults stlll there. Can you ring a local wildlife centre who can advice you. If they look abandoned can you put them in a large box or the dog crate.

Loopyloopy · 28/05/2020 11:58

Do they have feathers? If they do, just leave them alone. If you put them back in the nest, they will just come out again. Keep your dog restrained for a week or so.

I think the adults are still there. Il keep an eye on them made sure they have water and the dog has kept away. They have feathers but are just hopping around.

they will be fine as long as no predators get to them. they've probably just had a go at falling with style. hopefully their mum and dad have collected them by now.

(i work with professionally qualified animal people in a rural location so we are always putting signs up to not move random traffic cones due to tit nests etc and there is always a fledgling somewhere squawking indignantly about being left on the ground - we always leave them in peace).

Thank you everyone.
In total we had 6 yesterday and then noticed what im guessing is the mum was with them. Two of them have managed to sit on the fence so i am guessing they will be ready to fly soon. I have made a corner in the garden safe for them to roam and bathe.
I am enjoying checking on them every morning will miss them when they can fly

Ah, that’s a lovely update. Do you have any photos?

Lilmissmissy · 29/05/2020 20:25

Sorry tried to take a few this morning but they were hiding.
Sadly came home an hour ago to a dead one, neighbour said a cat has been lurking about today so maybe that is the reason. Only one left to what i can see. I just hope the others have managed to fly.

We’ve had two demanding and adorable blackbird fledglings hopping around the garden this week. It is lovely to watch them grow and fly themselves.

The last one is harassing its poor parents to death. Not keen on finding its own food. Reminds me of DD Grin
