well, gotten rid of the fleas on the anumals, and have now treated the hosue twice with flea spray...but teh little blighters must be still around and alive, because I am being bitten like mad...yuk....I have had enough of being the flea food...wish I could put the darn frontline on myself, sigh....

Which flea treamtents are the best for teh house....or is it maybe so bad that I would need to call pestcontrol to get rid of them?

yes, I havea dog and a cat, well kitten of around 20 weeks...and he is so far an indoor cat (but only because we were so delayed in getting his vaccinations done, iykwim)...and I got the frontline spot on for him, as well as for the dog.

Aero , which fleabombs were the ones you used then?

Hmm, well it seems to me that you really have done all the right things already. Frontline is usually one of the most effective products available at the moment.

Are you aware of frontline combo at all? It does the same as frontline but also has a flea hormone in it that the pets spread with them wherever they go so it is an easy effective long term treatment. The draw back is that it is prescription only unlike the standard frontline, so you can only get it from the vet, or via a written prescription from them vet. Perhaps you would consider that for longer term flea prevention though?

3andnomore · 23/09/2007 12:34

bg, I will ask about Frontline combo..have seen it on some websites where they sell it cheaper, but yes, you need to have a prescription for it and send it in...!

Start to wonder if it's actually also some spiderbites I have, well, or what I call spiderbites, lol...I get those every year in the autumn time...I suppose some critters get more agressive at certain times...

do fleas bite through clothes, btw?
It's just some of the bites are at places that aren't exposed at all...like my bottom, lol...

beautifulgirls · 23/09/2007 12:41

I don't think that fleas bite through clothes no, though someone else may know different. They are of course very small though and can get into clothes and travel about a bit under there.

Have you talked with your doctor about it at all - maybe they can help shed a bit more light on the problem for you if it is not actually fleas?

3andnomore · 23/09/2007 12:57

no, haven't seen my gp...as well, it's jsut some insect bites...and just itchy and annoyig...I still have some antihistamine tablets, which I take when it gets to much witht eh itching, lol...
I shall wait it out, and maybe I will try those flea bombs, and see what happens...I think the flea bombs kill other things, too, don't they?

so, I have just seen some kind of little critter (on my ys of all places)...twas greyish, and very little...certainly smaller then those brown fleas I picked out of pets fur the beginning of the week....possibly 1 millimeter or 2 maybe...it was jumping...so, is that a young flea or is that something else?

OP posts:
Aero · 23/09/2007 23:29

Sounds like some kind of flea if it's jumping.

The bombs were Bob Martin (which I wouldn't normally buy) ones. They were all I could find and cost about £4.50 each. We lit one in every room, then left the house for a couple of hours and opened the windows on our return. Slight smokey smell quickly disappeared and the fleas haven't been seen since. You do get really paranoid about them don't you. Think I'll look into the Frontline combo thing too, although the spray is meant to last a year, so perhaps will see how that goes first. We've had the cats (famously adopted from another mner) for three years now and this is the first time there's been a flea issue, so I can't complain really!

3andnomore · 24/09/2007 12:41

Aero...thanks...should be able to get hold of teh Bob Martin one easily, as they seem to be the ones stocked in the pet shops...
I suppose you really only need to do the bombs in carpeted rooms/rooms with soft furnishing...?

We used to use the Program combo (which was a tablet, not just for flea treatment, but also for worms...and we never had problems when we used it all teh time....), but it doesn't actually kill the fleas as suhc, just make them sterile, so, it's breaks the cycle...but then, I suppose that acclaim spray and the ohter one that was mentioned, both do that, too...hmmm...

Acclaim spray much more effective than Bob Martin, and you can get it in Boots, about £12.99 I think

3andnomore · 24/09/2007 14:14

will go later to the vet and see what they say....need stronghold...just found a flea on teh cat, so, the frontline is, for some reason not working with my animals, it seems...sigh...

OP posts:
3andnomore · 24/09/2007 14:15

I probably will end up using the fleabombs and teh acclaim or other spray mentioned...they both seem to be the same in a way, anyway...
what I like about the idea of the fleabobs is, that the fumes will get into everything...and I htink that is what is needed...

We had a bad case of fleas last yr...and it was always me that got bitten (ankles are a favourite!).I read somewhere that if you put down a clear bowl of hot water, the fleas wil be attracted to the warmth.it doesnt get rid obviously but it may show you how much of a infestation you have.Acclaim is brilliant-spray whole house, shut the doors and leave the house for a while..I just hoovered like a maniac after...daily sometimes twice daily. You need to clear up the infestation before we start putting the central heating on as that will hatch out the little buggers!..

Good luck though, hope you get it sorted asap..I still have scars on my legs/ankles from the little b*stards

goingfriggincrazy · 24/09/2007 14:27

I spoke to my vet last week who said its been a absolute mare for fleas this yr..I'm currently frontlining every 4 weeks whereas usually its 2-3 months between treatments..

3andnomore · 24/09/2007 14:45

I can see scars staying on my legs...lil buggers bites are so itchy and painful....good idea about the hot water bowl...

Sorry haven't read the entire thread but apparently fleas dont like garlic in the blood so maybe you could try taking odourless garlic capsules or summat? Failing that, get some insect repellant and rub it on your legs. Cat fleas LOVE me and i always get munched on so i am always looking for ways of not getting bitten. Also, when i was on a low carb diet, they never touched me then either. Must be a change in my blood.....

3andnomore · 24/09/2007 14:54

hmm...but I eat plenty of garlic (not so odourless, lol) sigh...insects always love me though...must have an appealing bloodtype...when we lived out in Cyprus I counted at one point over 100 moscito/midges and horsefly bites..just on my front...and I had equal the amount on my back...argh...

OP posts:
goingfriggincrazy · 24/09/2007 15:04

Mossies are attracted by carbon dioxide (in sweat and breath.does this we mean we smell more?.eek.Fleas are attracted by body heat.

I literally put elastic bands around my jeans to stop little b*ggers biting...

*Throws you a bottle of Jungle Formula

RGPargy · 24/09/2007 15:06

I'm exactly the same. Always get bitten. Except, as mentioned before, when i was low carbing.

Get the jungle formula out if i were you!

jacobandlysette · 24/09/2007 15:14

we moved into our house in july and the woman who owned it before us had left us with an infestation (there was a half empty can of flea spray i nthe cellar so she knew full well and didn't tell us). indorex didn't really work and the only thing that has stopped them coming back (except there seem to be a few that refuse to die) is ant stop spray - it's really cheap and you can get it from homebase and other similar stores.

we even got pest control in and it didn't work because we have wood floors with open cracks in between the floorboards so they can thrive down there, unlike with carpets the only go for the skirting boards to live apparently.

and i am told they can go for 8 months if they are unhatched eggs before hatching. given we don't have pets and we have been in the house for 2 and a bit months and are still geting the odd one, i reckon they can live for more than 3 days without a pet in the house.
