we have 2 german sheppards. a bitch and a dog. i live at my parents house and they are going on holiday on saturday till thursday. the bitch has just come on heat and i have got to keep them apart as much as possible, so she doesnt have puppies. but i know this is going to be an impossible job, so i was wondering, how long, after being stuck with the dog, can she have the injection?
is it 24 hours? in wich case i will have to try my best to keep them apart. or longer? so if they do get stuck, i dont have to worry about getting her to the vet asap. aparently she is at her most fertile when mum and dad are away, and i am really worried about not being able to keep them apart.

why not get her done? then you dont have to worry about it.

If the event hasn't happened it's pretty cruel IMHO to allow it to happen then go through the injection - better to get one of them 'done' or keep them seperate - they are living things, sorry.

my mums dog went the day after we thought she had been naughty with another dog, she had to be injected that day then go back 24 hours later.....and it wasn't cheap over 60 quid

fawkeoff · 17/09/2007 19:04

it would be cheaper in the long run to get one of them neutered...the bitch would be better as it halfs the risk of cancer

EmsMum · 17/09/2007 19:10

The OP can't just go and get her parent's dogs neutered unless they agree!

There isn't someone else who could look after one of the dogs is there?

Ring the vet and ask advice.

she is booked in to be done next week, but come on heat earlier than we thought she would. she only had a litter of puppies a few months ago, and was advised by the vet to wait till october before having her done, but they rang up at the end of last week to say she would be ok by now.
i wouldnt let her have the injection for no reason.
looks like i will have to be here all the time to keep them apart.
her litter of puppies was her first litter, and she had 12. some of them died in the night, as she was too sore to feed them all, and another had to be put down cause brain damage. 2 more had to be hand rearet to god, and one of them died too. we dont want to go through that again.

sorry, ment to say 2 of them had to be hand reared, not rearet. baby was on my knee!!

72 hours, potential for side effects is very very small but possible and in the very worst case side effects fatal bone marrow supression. Yes it is very very rare, yes it does happen, I have seen it. For that reason alone I would say don't rely on this please. If necessary shut the dogs in separate rooms or use a crate for one of them at a time so there is no chance of this happening.
I'd also check with your vet but the chances are they will not be spaying her while she is on heat. Best left to 3 months after the season unless there is a clinical need to do it sooner.
