Insurance - pedigree breeds

Hello

Does anyone know of the best insurance companies and who to avoid?

Unfortunately my mum passed away suddenly last month and I have inherited her Cavalier king charles spaniel bitch. She is 3 this month and has always been insured with Petplan, with no claims or pre existing health conditions. She came from a brilliant breeder who had her checked for all the usual common issues with the breed. My mum seemed to be paying a lot for insurance and I’m not sure if she was being ripped off? Obviously the policy will cancelled as it was in my mums name

Thanks!

I'm with Petplan and to be honest I couldn't really find anything that covered everything Petplan does, that was cheaper.
You can get the cheap superstore insurance, but in case of an emergency, the vet would want you to pay up front with these types of policies and if you have Petplan, they don't.
Also their claims department are brilliant. When we claimed the few times with our Lab, the claim was paid within 4 days.
They are a little more expensive, but from experience, worth every penny x

Boughtbymany seems to do what Petplan does, for cheaper

I have Tesco for my Persians. They've been great and always the cheapest, for really good cover.

Petplan are really good at paying out and cover generally. Pedigrees are more expensive, my pedigree cats are £80 pcm.

Petplan are very good, unlike many policies they cover dentals and they don’t raise premiums after a claim. Pre-existing conditions also fall off after 18-24 months with no flare ups, you just have to call them.

My cat escaped a few years ago and she was run over, like lots of vets mine are happy to claim directly from petplan as they are very reliable, so my cat had surgery to repair her leg (including an external cage) and physiotherapy, this cost me the £70 copay.

I had direct line for my dog which was the most comprehensive I could find at the time. However as he aged the premiums got ridiculous (never claimed). So I stopped it three years ago. I never bothered with my second dog.

You need to look at the defaquto ratings for individual policies as well as price - no point having a policy where they never pay out! www.defaqto.com/star-ratings/pet/dog-insurance/

Petplan nearly always gets good reports from people I know with pedigree dogs (and those with mongrels).
Tesco put our premiums up to an eye-watering £160 per month by the time our dog was 10. However, they were excellent at paying out direct to the vet on the two occasions we needed to claim, and quickly sorted a miscommunication on the vet’s part wrt to the final scans etc just before she died (vet charged us instead of them). So I’ve no complaints about claims etc, they just got a bit expensive!
