Fleas

Is anyone able to tell me what flea bites look like?

I have 4 bites on my abdominal area. Kitten had his first preventative flea treatment about 3 weeks ago. Haven't seen any fleas in the flat. No one else has bites.

Thanks!

They look like mosquito bites, kind of red and inflamed a bit, and V itchy!!

The best flea stuff we've found is from the vet, and you put drops on the back of the neck.

I think it's called Drontal. The stuff from supermarkets etc is rubbish IMO

Jojay, that neck-drop stuff is what I used...the bites are fairly small, red and a bit itchy. A bit like gnat bites?

Flea bites are different on different people aswell, depends how you react to them. Just because you're the only one who has visible bites doesn't necessarily mean you're the only one bitten, the others might just not react.
The bites when inflamed are small raised and red, very very itchy and if you look closely at them you can see a puncture mark in the centre.
If you think it is def fleas, then you'll need to treat the house aswell. Get some good spray from your vet and do absolutely everywhere in the house, all soft furnishings and carpets etc.

Good luck

Ok, thanks for advice. Will keep an eye out for them...from your description they don't look or feel like flea bites, but will monitor the situation closely! Bloody hell, we've only had him a month!

Drontal is for worms - the flea stuff is Frontline. You can get it from some pet shops now - not just the vet - although with a kitten as young as yours it would be better to get it from the vet, I think

The stuff was called Advocate, I think. Said it was all-round treatment for worms, fleas etc. Kitten is 5 months old

Seeker - you're right - it is Frontline.

We always have to de-flea our cat much more than monthly, as it says on the packet. he's a very out-doorsy cat who hunts a lot, so i think he picks up all sorts.

Our vet said it was fine to treat him more frequently, but do check with yours first if you want to do this.

We find if we treat him at the first sign of a flea ( either bites on us,or flea droppings on him - he is white so they're easy to see) we cn get away without treating the whole house - he's not in much and if i wash the throw on his favourite sofa, that's normally enough.

However, if it's been going on longer, it's worth doing the whole house. I've heard those 'bomb' things are quite good, but i haven't used one.
