House rabbits

DC have fallen in love with the idea of having rabbits and I'm keen too (other option was guinea pigs but I feel rabbits are more suitable, can be allowed to roam, can be house trained etc.) I've done a bit of research but please tell me everything I need to know. I know they are best kept in pairs. Current plan is to have a cage for when we are out and to let them free roam when we are home. Is it advisable still to have a run/pen too? Do males/females make better pets? Do you have your rabbits insured? Also struggling to find many for sale in the area that aren't from pets at home. I know they aren't the best place to get animals. Where do people get their rabbits from?

Oh just noticed you said DC. I wouldn't buy a rabbit for an under 7. Guinea pigs if they are under that age.

DC are 7 and 10 and have lots of experience of handling animals. They have a royal python which need pretty delicate handling and also used to everything from puppies, goslings and lizards to dogs and horses. They are very gentle but confident

Just a word of warning, if you do get a rabbit from a rescue make sure it's one that comes with a free month of insurance

I adopted a rabbit from a well known rescue last year, she had apparently had all health checks and was completely healthy, so straight away I took her to the vets for vaccs and microchipping (The rescue provided a voucher) on that vet visit it was picked up that she had bad teeth, due to genetics not bad husbandry, I hadn't even had chance to sort out insurance, it's nearly a year since I adopted her, every 7 weeks she has her teeth sorted by the vet, it costs me £215 I spoke to the rescue I got her from, they wouldnt take her back or help with the bill/use their vets but if I don't want to pay I can have her put down, like I'm going to let that happen ..

Regardless I honestly don't think rabbits make the best pets for children, I'd go with guinea pigs every time.

Oh god the chewing... I had a period of my buns living in the house but they were in love with chewing. The carpet, skirting boards, table legs, couch, shoes.. Anything! Everything except the things they were supposed to chew 😂 you will have to rabbit proof the house
