Where to get puppy that's not kennel club?

my parents would like to get a specific Bichon Frise/miniature schnauzer puppy. Kennel club no help as they don't do cross breeds!
Are there any other reputable places? Would rather not do pets4homes as wary of puppy farms?

Could you try rescue centres? I admit although most on Mumsnet don't like Pets4homes I got our two beautiful Lasho Apso puppies on there. They are two years old now and the most wonderful dogs you could ever meet. If you do use Pets4homes make sure you get a vets report on health of the dog and see puppy with damme on at at least two occasions before buying. We saw puppies suckling from damme so knew they were her puppies. The dogs we bought were brought up in family home with 2 children. It worked out for us but you do need to be very careful. We checked out all paperwork, including vets certificate and vaccination record, before buying.

Sadly they're adamant they want this type! Also it will live sort of part time with us and we have a baby and a toddler so rescue places won't touch us for good reason as it wouldn't be fair.
My sister and them have about 30 rescue dogs and cats over the last 25 years so feel we have done our bit!
But thank you, good advice about seeing the puppy with its mum.

Then they want a puppy farmed dog. No decent breeder would do this. It’s not a “type”. It’s a gamble. One I wouldn’t risk if you’re going to have it round children.

Stellaris22 · 05/02/2020 13:19

What is it about the type they want? Is it based purely on how it looks? Because crosses are always a gamble and you can't guarantee what you'll get, not worth the risk IMO.

Noloudnoises · 05/02/2020 14:46

They don't want farmed!

We have had both Bichon Frise and a schnauzer before and they just met a mix who was adorable apparently. Or they want the full breed. Small, fluffy, good natured, doesn't shed. Nothing poodle, nothing maltese.

Don't need lectures, wanted info.

They won’t get anything other than farmed or a backyard breeder who won’t health test and just wants to make some money.
Meeting a mix who was lovely doesn’t change that fact. And it’s not a breed. It’s a mix. They would have no idea how much like either breed it would be.
That’s not a lecture. That’s the facts.

DeathByPuppy · 05/02/2020 14:52

They might not want a farmed puppy but they will get a farmed dog because that cross isn’t a recognised breed and reputable breeders of healthy dogs don’t breed trendy crosses. They just don’t.

Perhaps they should’ve asked the owner of the ‘adorable cross’ where they got their their dog?

Stellaris22 · 05/02/2020 14:54

The issue with mixes is you don't know what you'll get, not a lecture, just advice. You can't guarantee temperament, health or looks.

Stellaris22 · 05/02/2020 16:56

Do they have experience with the Bichon Frise or Schnauzer breeds? Do they know what it's like to live with them, their quirks, temperaments, known health issues? Meeting a dog and thinking it's cute isn't the way to choose a breed of dog. Unfortunately it happens all too often that breeds are chosen based on looks and no knowledge of how to train, socialise them or the amount of exercise they need. Small dog does not necessarily mean it's an easy dog.

adaline · 08/02/2020 07:28

They might not want a farmed dog, but that's what they'll end up with if they insist on this particular cross!

Lefkosia · 08/02/2020 07:35

Good breeders just dont breed mixes like that

Kirkman · 10/02/2020 18:51

I get they dont want a dog from a puppy farm.

But the breed they want, mainly comes from puppy farms. Because good breeders dont breed them.

So it's a puppy farm (which shouldnt even be something people consider) or a different breed. Having met a nice cute one does change that fact.

I am sure that digs owners would insist their didnt come from a puppy farm. Chances are, that it did

HappyHammy · 10/02/2020 18:55

Why eont they just get either a bichon or a schnauzer, that would be much easier to find a reputable breeder or rescue.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 10/02/2020 20:51

I think they'd have to use pets 4 homes, there isn't really an alternative. Their best bet would be a mix from a family pet, I think you have to trust your instincts and use common sense to try and avoid puppy farms.

Wolfiefan · 10/02/2020 21:05

@Girliefriendlikespuppies that’s an awful suggestion. Someone putting two dogs that haven’t been health tested together. No regard for selecting the best match. Just breeding their pets and flogging the pups online.

Ellmau · 15/02/2020 15:55

Tell them to get a pure bred bichon - will tick all their boxes.
