HELP - How on earth do we stop our cat shi**ing in neighbours garden?????

Just had a neighbour knock at the door asking us to stop our cat going to the toilet in their garden. How the feck do we stop this??? We had no idea until just now and apparently he's been doing it for 3 and half weeks. They've got a cat repelant(sp?) or something but it's not stopped him.

She kept saying 'can you please stop him doing this' and I said I'd try very very hard but need advice as don't know how on earth we can control where he goes?

Any advice anyone? Don't want to upset the neighbours as we only moved here in November (it's already quite clear a lot of them don't like cats )

HELP?????

Tell them to throw a football at it?

Seriously orange peel is supposed to repel cats they could try that.

Thanks. Now they've gone and I've been able to think, I wish I'd suggested they hish loudly, spray water at him etc etc but I get a feeling they want US to do something which I think is VERY hard as we're not in their garden!! I'll suggest the orange peel. Also, that they take back the thing they bought that doesn't work and get their money back!!! I'd be happy to pay them for whatever might work but I really don't see how WE can stop him

Actually, good idea, may pop over with a water pistol and tell them they can use that, he hates water!

Can't keep him in 24/7, not only is it cruel for cats but also, as I'm a childminder he likes to be out of the way in the daytime.

how pathetic!! not you looney, your neighbours!
how the feck are you meant to stop your cat shitting in their garden?!
do they have no common sense?
maybe you should put it on a lead and chain it up in your garden?!
go with the water pistol idea.

fishie · 02/09/2007 11:06

get a litter tray in your house.

looneytune · 02/09/2007 11:08

smeeinit - hello I know, that's what I thought! Maybe we should put him on the naughty step??

fishie - that won't work unless he's locked in

Get them a cat that way there's no way your cat will sh*t in their garden.

looneytune · 02/09/2007 11:09

somehow, i don't think they'll be doing that!

but cats are generally pretty lazy and surely more likely to use a lovely tray beautifully prepared for them in own house rather than have to go next door and poke about in flower beds.

or you could rake off an area in your garden, got to be worth a try.

looneytune · 02/09/2007 11:12

I'll try but the litter tray would have to be upstairs due to the childminding plus tbh, he's never around in the day due to all the noise the kids make - he does anything to avoid coming in and only comes in for food in the daytime!

I agree with fishie - we've had 4 cats happily use a litter tray at home.

carolcoles · 02/09/2007 11:14

Apparently if you use lion poo manure that will stop it as they can smell a larger predator. I know it sounds ridiculous but some garden centres do sell it for that reason. Could be worth buying them a back to try?

hatwoman · 02/09/2007 11:15

you could put a litter tray outside. dh knocked up a wee "house" for one - 3 bits of ply, plus two bits for a roof, covered with felt - looked like a dog kennel. IN any case I think you can buy covered litter trays

carolcoles · 02/09/2007 11:15

sorry I meant bag not back

Theclosetpagan · 02/09/2007 11:17

Advise they use a water spray to scare the cat back over to your garden. Can sympathise as we have two cats - they use a litter tray and afaik they don't go into the neighbour's garden.

smeeinit · 02/09/2007 11:19

i think hatwomans idea is really good looney, get him/her a litter tray outside.
i have to say that i as a cm myself i wouldnt have a litter tray indoors just incase one of the kiddies got their hands on it.

MrsCarrot · 02/09/2007 11:23

I don't know but if you find out let me know so I can tell my neighbour.

pointydog · 02/09/2007 11:25

agree with pagan. Apologise to neighbours, say you are unable to control the cat yourself but give them permission to squirt your cat with a water gun if they see it doing this. Offer to buy them a water gun (it'd cost less than a fiver). Tell them that often works.

Phraedd · 02/09/2007 20:11

your cat may not want to use the tray

As soon as my cat started to go outside, she stopped using her lovely, clean litter tray. I have no idea why she prefers to use the garden instead.

bagpuss · 02/09/2007 20:29

We had neighbours like this once. They used to ask dh to clean up the mess too . Having said that, we did do it as they were a bit weird in other respects, e.g. parking their car really close to our brand new one on our shared drive when they had previously left plenty of room and playing loud music but complaining about ours. My other neighbour thought we were mad for entertaining them like this and if we had our time again I would have been polite but firm and told them to shoo the cat away. They had pea gravel in their borders which I think made our cat think it was a giant litter tray which didn't help. We have lots of neighbours with cats now (sadly we aren't cat owners any more) and dh just puts down orange scented washing up liquid in our car port where they tend to lurk, which seems to see them off.

nicm · 02/09/2007 22:27

hi, we have a small patch which i had freshly dug over and planted seeds when our cats had just started going outside! needless to say none of my flowers ever grew and this is the new 'litter tray'. i doubt he will come in to use the litter tray if he's used to going out to do his business - ours rarely use theirs now. either try that or get them a water pistol. tesco had ones for 87p!!
