Covered over litter trays - do they work?

One of my cats makes a bleedin' mess using the litter tray and turfs the stuff all over the place. Am considering one with a lid, but am wondering if cats actually like them? Or do they find the lid a bit scary? Anyone got one?

They will use them, but your house will still stink.

Hello Bomper... I saw the title and just knew it was you!

I didn't find the covered tray any more or less stinky than a tray that isn't covered. The aroma drifts whatever....

I used to use the covered trays until one of my cats got too fat to fit through the hole !

Seriously, I found the lid didn't stop them spreading cat litter through the house and I stopped using the lid on the tray when the other cat took a liking to peeing horizontally up the plastic rather than in the litter (dirty dirty animals)

The one thing I do like about the covered trays is that the actual tray is deeper than most you can buy (I have tried a few over the years)

I have now sited the litter tray down in the cellar with a cat flap on the cellar door - they can make as much mess as they like down there and I don't have to worry about DS playing with the tray etc.

Thanks all - looks like I will have to ride it out till the kitten is old enough to go outside and then get rid of the bleedin' thing!! Hi Meid - see you Sunday!!!
