Old cat keeps meowing!

Can anyone advise please? Our boy is 20 years old, still seems in pretty good shape but recently he's been following me / us everywhere and meowing. He's become very very demanding and seems to want constant attention. In the mornings he wakes us meowing. Could this be dementia?

It def sounds like dementia tbh, are you sure he's not in pain?

winterystorm · 30/12/2019 18:18

Thanks for replying. He doesn't seem to be but then I guess it's hard to know. He's generally been more active also. Will take him to the vets for a check. If it's dementia is there anything they can do, do you know?

Could be thyroid. How’s his appetite?

winterystorm · 30/12/2019 18:30

He doesn't over eat but does pester for our food when we eat.

My lovely old cat did this, me and the vet thought a combination of hyperthyroidism, dementia and hearing loss. She also had bouts of extremely frenetic hunting behaviour, which is a thyroid thing I believe. She attacked newborn ds and I had her euthinased. Still broken hearted.

I think dementia, thyroid imbalance or a combination of the two. Take the cat to the vet.

Hearing loss can be a big factor in older cats too. Definitely take him to the vet.

Has he gone deaf? My old cat was really vocal but became even more vocal once she lost her hearing

Sounds like Kitty Dementia! ! My 19 year old boy did this in his last year, he also used to sit facing the wall and the vet said it was normal for older cats, the yowling was very loud and throaty with no logical reason. It was mentally draining at times but our vet reassured me he was in no pain. He had lots of love & extra cuddles and kept going strong until he hurt his leg jumping off a table and it was kinder to say goodbye than put him through surgery 😢

Our old cat does this too, she has been diagnosed with dementia and hearing loss.
We often find her miaowing at walls in the corner of a room and have to gently stroke her to remind her where she is.. poor old girl, she is 21 now mind you and perfectly fine in all other senses

With one of our old cats, it was a mix of thyroid imbalance and, we suspect, dementia. She did the throaty yowling too. She was better once her thyroid was more in balance (surgery and meds) but sometimes a bit confused and quite shouty. She’d always been very talkative, though.

My cat is so loud and vocal, louder each year, incredible volume. Vet says she's deaf now. She's also taken to attacking people who walk past her from behind as I think she just doesn't hear them and it makes her jump.

winterystorm · 30/12/2019 19:04

Thanks all I will take him to the vet. It seems as though his hearing is ok and he's still pretty on the ball.

After a vet check up maybe look at this, it has good reviews. I've just started my cat on it
