Thinking of buying a Westiepoo - any experience?

We are thinking of buying a Westiepoo- does anyone have one?

My parents had a Westie so we know their personality, but haven’t come across one crossed with a cocker poo.

Anyone regretted getting a puppy?

Isn't a "westiepoo" a westie X poodle (not x cockerpoo)?
I'd be very careful - there are a lot of puppy farm poodle-mixes around (and many being passed off as puppies of family pets etc). Make sure you see mum (and are happy that she IS mum, not a random dog!), and see where they are being kept. Beware anyone selling pups this close to Christmas - responsible breeders won't usually do this as it's not usually a good time to settle in a new pup.
You might get the temperament and health issues from one or both parents, so I'd familiarise yourself with poodle traits. Also factor in that most poodle-mixes need regular grooming / clipping.
Personally I advocate adopting where possible, rather than buying - there is a rescue called "Many Years" which I don't have personal experience of, but who often have puppies as well as ex-breeding dogs - but I understand that not everyone feels able to adopt.

Thanks awkward paws - yes my mistake the mix is Westie and toy poodle.

I have asked to visit the puppy with it’s mom and to be fair to the seller she has asked all sorts of questions such as what hours we work etc.

Thanks for your tip re adoption... I will look into it.

Thank you!

You also need to make sure that both the Westie and the Poodle parent have had all health tests needed for their breed.

Really the question is "why", why would you want this crossbreed as opposed to a full breed Westie or a Poodle? Then at least you could find a proper reputable and experienced breeder.

Or look in rescue instead! Plenty of puppies and youngsters in rescue, including all the poodle crosses.

It won’t have had tests. It’ll come from a puppy farmer. Don’t do it OP. Sad

It's a mongrel. You could end up with anything.

Go to a rescue centre, get a mongrel, where they will at least know it's temperament and usually some of it's history.

lettersbyowl · 18/12/2019 14:51

I have no idea why you would want a Westie crossed with anything, rather than just a Westie! Best dogs in the world Wink

Get a Westie, or a Toy Poodle. No reputable breeder will be crossing the two.

My SIL has just adopted a lovely bitch from Many Tears - but she's in a terrible state after being used in a puppy farm to churn out poodle cross puppies for years until she was dumped as no longer fit to breed :-(

LochJessMonster · 18/12/2019 15:06

MN won't let you get any sort of poodle mix.

This is a good source of advice for checking a breeder -

Oh, and EVERYONE regrets getting a puppy! But its worth it in the end Grin

Problem is cross breads can’t always have the same health checks as pure breeds as they are essentially mongrels.

To help ease your mind about puppy farm I would insist on see the mother AND the father. A good breeder would let you. Health checks for both parents. And get to see their temperaments

Westies and poodles are both great in their own way. But a cross breed is a crossbreed.... and there are a lot of them looking for homes.

Our ddog is of very assorted parentage, and was handed in to rescue as an unwanted Christmas present.

@lettersbyowl - I have no idea why you would want a Westie crossed with anything, rather than just a Westie! Best dogs in the world

I'm afraid you're wrong there. They are almost the best in the world. I have a westie and a westie/crocker cross and while the westie is amazing [whisper] the cross is a nicer dog [stop whisper].

Mind you, she is very unusual in that she has none of the negative personality traits, other than a tendency towards stubbornness, of either breed. The only negative with her is that she sheds more hair than she actually possesses every day. My vet adores her and always comments on her amazing attitude and personality.

To the op - why are you looking for that particular cross? Is it simply that one is available or are there other reasons?

What I would suggest doing is looking up both breeds, assume you will get all the negative characteristics of both, and decide if a dog like that would work for you. If yes, then provided it is well bred, with parents who have had health checks, you are good to go. If not, then maybe look at individual breeds.

We originally went looking for a westie but heard of an accidental pairing (owner of male dog minding female dog belonging to his son when dog in heat). Both parents were very chilled and were well bred from a health perspective so we took a chance on her.
