Cat on bed or in kitchen at night?

We have a very loved old boy. He's 14 and has always been a member of the family rather than a pet. He is very affectionate and talkative. He loves to sleep with us, snuggled between DH and me at night, purring his head off.

But now he'd old, he's getting challenging. He wakes up a lot at night and demands attention. He drools a lot - often onto my face Hmm. He walks all over my face and worst of all, he's not exactly incontinent but leaves marks on the duvet which means I have to strip the bed all the time.

I'm getting really fed up of it but DH says it's mean to have him downstairs every night. I insist when I start actually suffering from sleep deprivation.

We work from home, so he gets loads of cuddles during the day.

Writing this down makes me think I'm not being unreasonable at all to shut him in the big kitchen, in his cosy basket with access to outdoors via his cat flap. But am I?

As long as he is warm i would let him have the kitchen

My 2 cats slept in my bed until one of them started shitting around the house at night Hmm now their both in the dining room at night cause i was sick of waking up to poo ( my kitchen is too cold to put them in there )

Cheddar does all of those things. Very occasionally leaves skid marks or pukes on the bed. I got her a heat pad to put on her bed in the lounge, and she leaves me alone a lot more. She still comes for cuddles. But doesn't wake me up anymore.

Cat bed with heat mat in your room?

I know. Blush

Heat pad is a brilliant idea. And I know it's silly but it never occurred to be to put a basket for him in our room because he's always slept in our bed. But I bet he'd be happy with that, as he could then chat to us through the night, which he loves to do.

Ooooh a tricky one. I don't have the answer but can feel your pain. I've experienced grief in the past and now live by the motto "everyone you love is going to die". Glum I know but it's true. If he died tomorrow would you regret putting him in the kitchen? Good luck with it .... from someone with an old cat too who pukes everywhere

Bed. At his age he won’t cope well with change and fret if he’s not allowed upstairs with you.
Buy some more bedding so that you can change it if it gets a bit mucky!

You can get waterproof duvets, I think 14 is too old for change.

It's pretty disgusting to have a cat pissing and shitting on your bed when there's no need for it. And I speak as a cat owner

Providing your kitchen is warm ish with a cosy bed or whatever for him, then why wouldn't you put him in there?

I have a small furry blanket on my bed which my cat sleeps on. Can you get something like this which is washable- it might preserve your bed?
