How can I stop dog messing in his cage?

We got a 18 month lhasa apso 3 weeks ago and at first we put him in the kitchen when we were out but he tore the draft excluders off the doors, weed and pooed everywhere including on the kitchen table, so I decided to cage him and he seems to be much better in there but in the day if I leave him he dirty's even if i've just taken him out for a walk and he's done his busines while out.

He also doesn't seem to have a clue when you ask him to sit - even though I know he can do it because he has done. He seems just about as obedient as my two toddlers.

I'd suggest taking him dog training.

ok I bought a smaller cage because it was a big cage - went out today and he's done it again. But he's tried to get it out of his cage so it was all over the cage, over his back legs and up the wall. Nice not.

If he is house trained while you are about, then it suggests he is suffering from separation anxiety. If this is the case you need to speak to your veterinary surgery for advice about behavioural referral and get some qualified advice about this.

The vets gave me or rather sold me a feremone air freshner thing when we first had him. He was also neuted 2 weeks ago and I have taken him to one dog training session but haven't been able to take him back because of him being neuted and the children being off school.

The thing is because its summer the back door is open most of the time when we're about so I don't know what he's like.

I think its the separation thing because when we first had him he hated being on his own.

Went out on Wed and obviously didn't close the cage properly - he was on the kitchen table how I don't know seems his legs are only about 6 inches long and all the chairs were under the table.

But he had messed once and weed loads, emptied the wash basket, torn a box and scratched at the door.

Dog training here we come as soon as the kids are back in school.

you can buy a spray from pets at home thats supposed to stop them from going to the toilet on the place you spray.

have a look on their website, and go to the puppy section they have tips on toilet training.I think the best thing would be to train him as you would a puppy
