We've had a real problem this summer too. There is an epidemic! The usual tactics failed so I went all out and declared absolute war. This is the action I took (which has worked thankfully)! I took a week off work to get us flea free 🙄
DAY ONE:
Applied Deet (Jungle Formula) on my ankles to deprive the fleas of my blood.
I then sprinkled loads of table salt on all the carpets. (Left it on overnight).
Shook all rugs outside and sprinkled salt on them, leaving them all in one room and shut the door.
Applied Advantage to both of my cats, left it for a couple of hours and combed them.
Washed all cushions, blankets, bedding throws etc then sprayed them with Bob Martin (from Wilko).
Swept, then vacuumed and washed the hard floors, adding a little bleach or washing up liquid to the mixture, depending.
DAY TWO:
Applied Deet.
Sprinkled/ applied cedar Wood oil around external door frames (flea repellant - to prevent them hopping in from the garden)
Vacummed the salt up, then thoroughly vacuumed every surface, under furniture, in corners, sofa etc.
Shook rugs outside again, put them back in situ then vacuumed them.
Sprayed whole house immediately with Indorex, including sofa, dining chair seats, under the bath... Everything!!!
Bleached every bleachable surface.
DAY THREE:
Applied Deet to ankles again (for 14 days and nights)
Combed cats
Vacuumed whole house again
Sprayed cat beds with Bob Martin again
I was now starting to see mostly 'sluggish' fleas rather than lively jumpers...poisoned and dying. (The trouble is, they jump on the cats outside and it takes a couple of hours for them to die. This is why you need the Deet.)
I cleared the garden of leaves and squirted washing up liquid and hot water on slabs/steps and even on the places on the lawn where I knew my cats slept (washing up liquid kills fleas).
DAY FOUR onwards:
Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum as often as you can to break the cycle - of you don't have time to vacuum everywhere at least do where the pets walk, sleep etc. Get right in to the fibres of rugs, vacuum underneath them/both sides if you can.
Let your cats roam the whole house so that any hatching fleas jump on them, bite and die quickly.
I'm combing the cats every 3 days. Still finding the occasional flea on them (over 2 weeks later) but they're dead or dying. Picked up from outside though, rather than off our carpets.
I'm vacuuming every day (rotating rooms so I do a couple and not the entire house every day!) and applying deet if I go in the garden - to prevent me bringing fleas in.
I will also spray their beds every week (bob martin because it's insecticide free so ok to keep spraying) and wash them regularly.
It took me a week to really get on top of the problem but I think I've won the war.
You're not alone and it's nothing to do with your cleanliness, there's been a plague this year, trust me!!!!
Keep us posted 😊👍🏼
