Two of my dogs got into a fight with each other, and whilst I was dragging the biter off, and into the utility room, the bitten dog ran off. She didn't have a collar on, as she slipped out of it as I was grabbing the collars to try and separate them. She is microchipped, and was injured in the fight so I'm hoping that whoever finds her takes her to a vet.

We've spent the last couple of hours driving round looking for her. I've phoned the local Dogs Trust, and left a message on the dog warden's phone as this all happened at 6.00 pm, just out of office hours. Tomorrow morning I'll phone the local vets and the RSPCA.

Does anyone have any other ideas please?

DD2 is sobbing into her pillow, and I'm telling her all about the lovely people who will have found Tiger and taken her to the vet, and hoping with all my heart it is true

she will probably be hiding somewhere having a little sulk and then you will see her strolling down the road, she will be back soon!

iliketosleep · 10/08/2007 20:25

have u tried ringing the police? they could ask patrol officers to keep an eye out on their travels

Itsthawooluff · 10/08/2007 20:35

Middle of no-where rural beat so I'm not even sure we have patrols! But a good idea, I'll give them a call.

doglost.com (or co.uk) is step up to help people who loose dogs. They exsist all over the UK and so someone is bound to be local to you to help

The Police were fab when our dog took himself off for a walk.

When he's found, the warden, vets, police will scan him first as last to see if he's chipped so take comfort from that.

We put the regular ads offering a reward all around the area we lived. Also paid for an ad in the newspaper (in colour! but I loved that dog). It happens the person who got it didn't want to return it but there were a few persons who see him with her who rang to tell where she was. So... it took 2 weeks but we had it back.

THanks for your help. Feeling a bit more cheerful but still desperately guilty

It's not your fault, be patient, chances are she may come out of her own accord when she is hungry.

IsabelWatchingItRainInMacondo · 10/08/2007 20:51

on

iliketosleep · 10/08/2007 21:14

what breed of dog is it?

Spidermama · 10/08/2007 21:19

Definitely ring around the police stations. Put up posters too and just ask people in the area who are out and about or people in shops etc.

Hopefull she'll be licking her wounds and will reappear in a day or two when she feels hungry and homesick.

Fingers crossed for you. I've been there. You must be pacing around atm.

BTW I put loads of posters up and had quite a few weirdos phoning, some of them giving false sightings or having a 'joke'. This was extra upsetting given what we were already going through. It could just be because I was in central London at the time, but I thought I'd warn you.

IsabelWatchingItRainInMacondo · 10/08/2007 21:32

oh yes, beware of the weirdos... be sure you are the one picking up the phone all the time.

check your microchip paperwork. A friend of mine lost her dog 2 weeks ago and she rang the microchip company and for £7 they emailed everyone within a 30 mile radius who had dogs and had used their service. Also was advised by vets and police to not put that dog had been microchipped, apparently it has been known for thieves to cut the chip out of dogs in order to sell on.
My mate got her dog back 3 days later all well and good.
good luck. I think the main thing is getting word out that the dog is being looked for because people wont report a dog if they think its a stray and they want to keep it.

DontlookatmeIamborrrring · 10/08/2007 21:52

Mine escaped a few months ago but I got him back that day luckily (he wasn't chipped and the person wanted to keep him!).

I have also found 4 dogs and each time took them home, fed and watered them and contacted the dog warden/police.

I'm sure that he will be fine, if you are in a rural area then hopefully there's less chance of him being run over. Do you have farms nearby and have you told all of the neighbours to look out for him? Maybe he will make his own way home after his big adventure.

Fingers crossed that he comes home safe and sound - keep us posted!

beautifulgirls · 11/08/2007 10:44

Check out the places where you would normally go out with him - he is likely to head there if they are nearby and familiar. Lots and lots of notices up where people go to alert them to the fact he is missing. If he is insured your give your insurance company a ring. They will usually cover you for advertising costs in the search for him. Local newspaper adverts, call the police, ring around all the local vets anyway, just in case for some reason his microchip failed to scan ok (rare but possible). Call the micrchip register to alert them to fact he is missing too. It is quite hard to remove a microchip by the way. I have never seen a case of that happening except where we have had to do it for a medical reason - and it was a pig to get out. A bit like looking for a needle in a haystack. If you say on the notices he is microchipped I personally believe it is more likely anyone who has him is likely to realise that they have to give him back. If he had been stolen that perhaps would be a bit more risky but personally if it were my dog I'd still advertise that fact even then in the hopes they would panic and get rid of the dog.
Good luck

AnAngelWithin · 11/08/2007 10:49

any luck?

IsabelWatchingItRainInMacondo · 12/08/2007 00:55

I would not advise advertising as "stolen", the plain truth is that the dog escaped but even if she didn't, who is going to take care of/return a dog when the owner has been leaving ads that make them look like a thief? If it happened to me, I would put the dog in the street again when nobody was looking and close the door. Sorry.

iliketosleep · 12/08/2007 17:20

have you found your doggie yet??

beautifulgirls · 12/08/2007 20:30

any news?
Re the stolen thing - I was talking about advertising the fact the dog has a microchip, not suggesting advertising that the dog had been stolen when it hadn't

Itsthawooluff · 13/08/2007 12:16

I found her!

Spent the weekend with whole family, and extended family, driving and walking round and doing house to house calls. Then on Sunday night went to a house where the answer to " Have you seen a greyhound running about" was "Yes, she is in the woods by our fishing lake, but she won't come out".

Eventually I managed to find her, and she was soooo sheepish, wouldn't come close at first, probably thinking " I am in such deep doo-doo", but eventually she came to me. Got her home and bathed wounds, which are surface, but bled a lot, so had to soak crusted blood off her. Dosed her with painkiller and antibiotics, and now she's a lot happier.

Obviously a dog with good taste as she ran to the biggest, poshest country house in the area. Maybe she was trying to get adopted by the county set!

Thanks very much for your help and support.

{And to the small minded person who removed the note my dd's had written and put up on the notice board in the church porch, and put a note up saying "Only notices about church matters on this board" - rats to you pal. It's no wonder congregations are declining if that's the kind of approach you adopt }

iliketosleep · 13/08/2007 12:18

yaaaaaaay so glad you have got her back and her injuries arent to severe! cant believe that about the church board! shows where christianity is at now doesnt it!!

Itsthawooluff · 13/08/2007 12:23

Thanks Ilike! I was pretty staggered myself, but I think rural parishes in particular can sometimes suffer from the "Jobs worths".
