New puppy

We’ve had our 9.5 week old puppy since he was 8 weeks. We seemed to be getting somewhere with toilet training and for a few days he was going outside mostly. Now he will mostly poo outside but will save almost all wees for inside. O take him out so often (every half hour if he’s not asleep) but no matter how long we’re Out there he almost always waiting until we’re back in to wee. It feels like he’s waiting to get back in to go. I’m doing what I think is right- take him out regularly, have a word I say to encourage him to go, get really excited when he goes outside and give him a small treat. Does anyone have any other advice or is it just a case if he’s very young and I just have to carry on until it clicks?

This advice is probably rubbish but for what it is worth

  1. Whilst a puppy , there are puppy mats you can buy so a bit like a nappy on the floor. Put by exit area - lets them know where they need to aim for

2 exactly right to give him treat / praise for weeing outside

3 if you can if you see him going for a wee inside , pick him up and take him outside immediately

  1. When my ( both male ) dogs started to cock a leg to wee ( so older than puppies , it seemed they were much more interested in weeing outside rather than inside.

5 Of course leaving them somewhere with e.g. tiles etc makes accidents much easier to deal with , but then that depends on your house.

Good luck with it.
I do think lots of walks and don't use bleach ( others who know better tell me ) to clear up accidents - has ammonia and dogs think it is wee. Can't remember which one but use an enzyme based cleaner , widely sold in pet shops , or ( can't remember if it is bicarbonate of soda - it stops smells - some people use it for fridges )

So nothing perfect but a few ideas to try.

He is still very young and I wouldn't expect him to be clean in the house reliably until he's about six months old.

Until then take him outside every 30 mins (when awake) plus immediately after

  • drinking
  • waking
  • eating
  • playing
  • whenever he shows signs of wanting to go, such as pacing, circling, sniffing

When he starts to wee repeat whatever word you want (eg "wee wee") over and over so he links the word with the action. When he does wee outside praise him.

If he has an accident inside don't react. Just clean it up with an enzyme cleaner and watch more closely next time. If you spot him having a wee give an interrupting noise (uh-uh) pick him up and take him straight out to finish.

Every time he wees outside he is learning to go outside. Every time you miss out and he wees inside he is learning to wee inside. Your job is to maximise the outsides and minimise the insides.

Repeat, repeat, repeats for the next few weeks.
