Roborovski hamsters are awake more during the day than other breeds(and at night) Not so good for handling, but incredibly cute. They are the smallest breed of hamster, very active and entertaining to watch, but as I said not so easy to handle.

gold fish ! facinating, calming and helps you cover the death module with lo in a painless way. !!
We've had three now for 5 weeks. Still alive!

PestoMonster · 04/08/2007 21:46

Christywhisty, they are manic

MadMazza · 04/08/2007 21:48

Don't go for a rabbit. We had two - one died and the other has terrible problems with its teeth - it costs us £20 at the vets every month to have the teeth clipped - absolute nightmare!!!!

another vote for a cat...

pointydog · 04/08/2007 22:03

cat. We (well, I) decided against a hamster and went for cat

yogabird · 04/08/2007 22:11

guinea pigs are lovely - you need two. We are babysitting two for a fortnight and will get 2 for dd's birthday

Pestomonster
I had 2 robos for 2 and half years and they were gorgeous, much nicer than the syrians(had 18 if them at one time).

We used to handle them over a box, just incase they took a kamikasi dive. But they were so lovely just to watch and very sweet natured as they don't bite.

We have two gerbils. Awake a lot during the day. Not nocturnal like most hamsters. Very clean, unsmelly animals too. Very easy to care for. Ours don't like being handled though, so not always good for stroking. DD loves watching them though.

iamasurvivor · 12/08/2007 23:46

you should know that hamsters are nippy little buggers and are prone to diarrhoea.

we have two gerbils.

SixKindsofCrisis · 13/08/2007 08:44

Guinea pig. Awake in day and relatively easy for a small child to handle. Great fun.

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 13/08/2007 08:49

chipmunks are great! brill entertainment as they have so much energy, they do need a bigger cage tho!

LizaRose · 13/08/2007 09:07

We have hamsters, and they conveniently wake up just after bath time, kids feed them and play with them as part of bedtime routine. They're at school all day most of the year anyway so doesn't matter that the hams are asleep.

expatinscotland · 13/08/2007 09:13

Don't you have to clip a guinea pigs' nails?

My sister said the rabbits were hard work.

Thankfully, none of these pets has a very long life expectancy.

She says, 'Go hamster or gerbil.'

tjacksonpfc · 13/08/2007 09:48

id vote for rabbit but then im biased they arent hard work they need food once a day hay once a day fresh water nad cleaning out 1/2 a week my dcs 3 and 2 love our rabbits we currently have 43 of them with babys that we breed and show they are great ani,als and will live longer than hamsters or squeeckys
