EEEEEEEEK! The new Goldfish are laying on the bottom of the tank! What does that mean?

Tbh they've done it since last weekend which is when we bought them.

I cleaned the tank and set it up the day before we got them, put tonic in it, introduced them properly but all they do is lay on the bottom of the tank all day.

The only thing I can think of is that there is a funny gravy like smell coming from the tank??
Have kept fish all my life but never had this before.

is there oxygen filteration?

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 26/07/2007 20:54

They died with their boots on ? Hence their inability to float to the top.

Sorry chop, I couldn't resist.

Nbg · 26/07/2007 20:55

Actually I was thanking God for the fact that this was an old MNer. Some of the newer fluffy ones would have had me hung out to dry.

LeafTurner · 26/07/2007 20:56

gravy ?

sounds weird !

Did you cycle tank before introducung fish ?

Have you done partial water change ?

Nbg · 26/07/2007 20:57

dont really fancy telling dd that Spongebob, Patrick and Squidward have gone to visit Davy Jones' locker.

Ah - just read OP again - sounds like you have put new fish into new tank without cycling !

Have you tested water with test sticks ?

Might be nitrates ? If so you need partial water change every couple of days until tank cycled ! (about 25% of water at a time)

Nbg · 26/07/2007 20:59

snort LJG

Nope didnt do the full cycle thing, just cleaned the tank throughly and set up with water the day before.
Water change is my next thing.

The smell is really odd.

What;s the tonic ?

You need water conditioner to take the chlorine out of the water.

bozza · 26/07/2007 21:02

oh nbg we'll donate Tessie and William Barrett if that'll help? DS and DD totally lost interest, and DH (who's idea it was) keeps threatening to put them in the pond at the golf club.

Noddy and Peter Crouch have been disposed of. The previous generation of Dora and Gerrard also.

Can you tell that DD names one fish each time and DS the other? Although none of us can grasp who William Barrett is. Maybe I should google him.

MadEyemarthamooDy · 26/07/2007 21:03

I have no idea - all my goldfish die.

Fish and gravy not a good combination though.

Nbg · 26/07/2007 21:05

am pmsl at your names Bozza

The tomic is the stuff to take the chlorine out. Tap safe I think its called.

Yes your right, gravy and fish is never a good combination.

Ours is called Pilchard III (Pilchard and Pilchard II died). As did Penguin and Penguin II.

Goldfish are pants.

Nbg · 26/07/2007 21:10

Pilchard

I like it.

Dd has been asking for a cat even though we have 2 dogs so the goldfish were a good compromise.
