We need a new sofa and I would really like to get a leather one. But we've got 2 cats - both just over a year old. Is this a bad idea? Will they rip it to shreds or puncture it? Advice please.

I have 2 cats and all my furniture is leather, there is no problem at all with cats. If anything it's better as you can just wipe it clean.

A bit long in responding as I went on holiday just after posting. Thanks for letting me know your experience.

my cat has just turned 1 and other than the day after we bought her home (from rspca aged 6 months) she hasn't scratches any of our leather sofas.

The one time she did, was 2 days after we had them delivered She scratched one arm of our brand new leather sofa but hasn't done it since.

I have a cat scratcher in my lounge which he sits on most of the day looking out of the window and uses to scratch on rather than my leather sofas !

Our cats damaged our leather sofa within days of it being delivered (we must be unusual or unlucky)

I started a similar thread to this a couple of months ago when I was looking to replace the sofa my 2 cats had ruined in less than 12mths.

We have tried providing them with ample scratching facilities, and have sprayed furniture that horrible smelling 'pet behave' spray, but unfortunately nothing stops them scratching the sofa. I have always wanted a leather sofa but thinking sensibly about it now I realise it would have been a BIG mistake.

As it happens, our new (non-leather) sofa arrived last week and has already had one arm severly pulled at and cat puke on one of the cushions . DH is now constantly nagging me to have the cats adopted as he is so annoyed... ...Although I'm not convinced anyone would have them!?
