Adopting a retired greyhound

Hello!

I've been thinking about adopting a retired greyhound for a year now, and have finally persuaded my DH.

But pet insurance - if I were to get comprehensive lifetime cover, what sort of figures am I looking at per month? Is it ££ or £££?

We have no cats, older children (youngest is 8) and a very calm household. I think we're the perfect family for a greyhound Grin. Any tips, other things to think about?

Daily walks aren't a problem. Only problem I can see is finding a fenced in field so it can have some off-lead running time, assuming it won't respond to recall...

TIA

We adopted an ex-racing greyhound over 2 months ago and it’s been a brilliant decision. Initially we wanted a rescue dog but something smaller than a greyhound but found there are very few dogs in rescues that are suitable for rehoming with children under 10. We adopted from a greyhound rehoming kennels nr London, happy to let you have details. Our boy has been housetrained since day 1, is great in cars and we can leave him for up to 3-4 hours. Insurance-wise we found ‘bought by many’ was cheapest. My youngest is 7 and we had to make sure she knew the rules for our dog so no approaching him while he’s eating, his bed is his space, if he takes something he shouldn’t then offer a treat rather than just take it away etc. We also watched some short YouTube clips on dog body language so she could understand when the dog was saying he didn’t like what she was doing and stop. Overall he’s a big softy, incredibly affectionate and ok around small dogs and cats, we no longer muzzle him as he hates it.

Sounds perfect Hodgeheg3. Did your dog have any anxiety issues? How long do you reckon it took for him to settle, you could leave him alone?
