Knackered due to unsetttled night - barking

I have 3 dogs and lastnight one of them decided tobark on and off all night. A house a couple of doors down was having a party and as it's usually quiet outside it obviously spooked him all the noise and then this wound up the other two.
I usually ignore any night barking as it's so rare but brought him up to sleep on the landing last night as this was the only way to stop him. He's not usually allowed upstairs so dont want to do this really.

ANy ideas on what i can do tonight if he continues?

We have three dogs too and it is a real pain when they set each other off isn't it?
Ours only bark in the night if there is noise outside (like yours last night). Hopefully if it is quiet outside tonight yours should be OK?

If it was daytime I'd separate them into different rooms downstairs but they're too young and destructive still to be left like that on their own.

I would probably do the same as you and bring the noisy one upstairs. I must admit our youngest one is only 5 months and sleeps upstairs anyway-much to dh's disgust as he does not believe in dogs going upstairs! The trouble is she was whining to get upstairs to me at 6.00am (or even earlier) and I was getting dprived of sleep!

Dh is also away at the moment hence why I did it too!

What breeds are they hercules?

hercules1 · 22/07/2007 11:19

The noisy one is a cocker spaniel. The other two are unusual so dont want to say incase recognised. Needless to say the cocker is the hardest one! What about you?

Our old one is a mixture-we got him from Battersea Dogs Home when he was a tiny puppy. He is a cross collie/staff/lab I think-he is 13 now!
We have a 5 year old German Shepherd-she is long haired and gorgeous. The pup is a Jack Russell/Border terrier cross and an absolute mischief-much harder work than the other two ever were!

Does a mizzle stop them from barking?

Please dont muzzle with a muzzle that stops them opening their mouth (there are different types) as they are not safe to be used for long periods. If a closed mouth dog vomits it will choke on it, if it needs to pant to cool off it cant and heat stroke is a serious problem.

If it happens tonight, turn on a radio or other recognisable noise such as a washing machine to try and disguise outside noise. If that does not stop it you have two options - give in or put up with it tonight. Then contact your vet in the morning to get the dog checked over and find out about various options to try and help (diffusers/medications/behaviour training etc) and do so before the habit becomes really firmly established.

Good luck - anyone have any ideas to stop our local kids collecting in the park outside and singing at midnight (since the police and security guard were of no help at all!)

I brought him upstairs last night as I was so tired from the previous night. No problems at all and he slept on the landing. One of the other dogs is going through adolesence at the moment and so I think this is having an effect on them all due to her leapingaround more than usual.

Glad you had a better night Hercules. I must admit my young one is as good as gold if she can sleep upstairs-I just have to put up with the moaning from DH!
