What kind of insurance to take out for new puppy?

Hello,

I’m hoping to get some advice from dog owners.

We pick up our puppy in a few weeks’ time and I would like to get the insurance arranged for her by the time we collect her.

I’ve had a provisional look and various policies have a difference cap on total bills payable per year or a max that would pay out per condition.

I have absolutely no measure of how expensive vet bills can be and so no informed idea of what level of cover I should be putting in place.

Any advice would be great!

Vets fees all depends on the size of the dog. What breed are they?
I would avoid petplan, while we had no problems with them when claiming they raised our policy cost every year. We were last quoted over £50 a month for the top level of cover on our golden retriever. I've switched us to bought by many for £28 a month for the middle level of cover.
It's best to do a price comparison. Most companies will do 4 weeks free. The level of cover you need will depend on the size of the dog, if a chihuahua breaks a leg it isn't going to cost upwards of £8k so you wouldn't need to pay for that much cover.
We have claimed for our dogs ears before and that cost about £400 as he had to be put under and have them syringed.
Worth checking excess too, ours was £100 with petplan but £0 with bought by many

A lifetime policy would be best with a decent amount per year. I have cat insurance through 'bought by many' and they recently paid out a claim with no quibbles

She’s a Golden Doodle, so predicted to be a medium-large dog based on the size of the parents.

It sounds like getting a lifetime plan is the way forwards and “bought by many” for the company? It’s not anywhere I’ve heard of, but no experience of pet insurance, so will check them out.

Thanks so much!

I would search in the doghouse topic as this question has come up a few times.

Unlike PP I am with petplan and I have claimed around £5000 and my dog is only 2.5 years old. The premiums have hardly risen on the two years I have claimed with them.

However. I have heard people rate boughtbymany and a few others but I can't comment on them as I have only had petplan.

Whoever you decide to go with get a life cover policy and for as much yearly limit as you can afford. Avoid any that have limits on conditions as it's pointless having a £10000 yearly limit if it only pays out £2000 per condition. Also look at the policy T&cs carefully as not all are equal. Does it cover dental, behavioural, hydrotherapy etc. Does it stipulate their own list of specialist vets so you would have to use them rather than ones your own vet recommends.

It's important to get one you are happy with because changing is very hard to do later down the line because anything your have seen your vet about, even if you haven't claimed, can be viewed as a preexisting condition for new policies.
