Neighbour keeps feeding my cat even though he has hear

One of my neighbours keeps feeding our cat who has cardiomyopathy. He needs tablets twice a day but because she’s feeding him he isn’t coming home. I’m at wits end. I’ve talked to her numerous times and I’ve even offered for her to have him and I’ll supply the tablets. But she says she’s in and out of hospital and does t want that responsibility.

I wouldn’t mind but when he does come home he’s becoming aggressive towards us if we don’t let him out straight away and often swipes at us. Which is really worrying me as I am now pregnant with our first. I’ve talked to her so many times and she always says she’ll stop but then I always see her letting him out of her house in the morning. On top of everything else he’s becoming really obese which won’t be good for his heart. I’ve limited any food he has here but I still need him to come back for his medication.

Be very blunt with her and tell her she is killing your cat. Every time you see her let him in or out go round and tell her to stop. Hopefully she will get fed up of the daily visits and stop doing it. Also if he is going there for food there is a good chance he visits other neighbours too. Get him one of them do not feed collars so everyone knows.

I’ve tried those collars but he always loses them because of the fast release. She now refuses to open her door to me and quickly shuts it when she sees either me or my partner. It’s just hard because she’s being difficult if she wants him I’d happily show her how to do the tablets and everything just to keep him alive. We’ve had him since he was a kitten so I just want him to be healthy

I wonder if it would be worth contacting the RSCPA and see if they can have a word. Because Wilson is right - she is killing your cat and needs to be stopped.

Make a large sign which reads:

Woman at no 37 is killing my cat!

put it in your front garden!

I am actually only half joking. You need to force the issue somehow. Put a note through the door every single time - stop feeding my cat, you are killing him.
Send her solicitor's letters.
Keep drumming it into her that she is killing your cat.
get the Do Not Feed collar, and sew it on to a normal collar, to by-pass the quick release. (a shoe maker would be able to do that)

I think I would make the cat go cold turkey. Lock him in for 2 weeks, litter tray etc. he will go nuts for a few days and then re-settle.

You could see if you can contact your community police officer and ask her/him to have a word. The sight of officialdom on her doorstep might make her think twice.

If it were me, I'd keep the cat indoors for a stretch, as pp has suggested. It'll be hard on him and you, but it would stop her from getting hold of him again.

Alternatively, turn up on her doorstep with a kitten? (Definitely not a serious suggestion 😄)

LordWheresMyShoes · 29/04/2019 11:09

Keep him indoors. I'm sorry, that's going to be all there is to it. I know he won't be happy for a bit, but he will hopefully settle.

Brogs24 · 29/04/2019 21:16

I might try keep him in the spare room with a litter tray for a hit and see if that stops him. Might make her think he’s lost interest in her too. Wouldn’t mind but She lives right near the road and when we first asked her to stop she explained how she used to feed someone else’s cat until it go ran over.....

Eurgh who are these people who will keep on feeding a cat that isn't theirs, when it has been made very clear it's detrimental to the cat? I hope you find a workable solution OP, horrid situation to have to deal with
