How much would you spend to save a pet's life?

Our family cat is 8 years old. She's technically my sister's cat, but when my sister grew up and left home the case stayed with my mum (as she has a garden), and really we all see her as our family cat.

Our cat is poorly. The likely cost of specialist treatment is £3-4,000, but the vet says she could well lead a normal life after that. Without treatment, she would need to be put down.

We are hoping to claim £2,000 on pet insurance so that leaves potentially another £2,000 to find ourselves.

My mum can't afford to contribute at all. My sisters and I have some savings but I'm saving for a wedding, my sister is looking to buy a flat... we're not wealthy but not living in poverty either.

Some of our friends are saying we should just have our cat put down, because it's too much to spend, whether you have the money or not. I do understand some people literally do not have access to the money and would have no choice. In our case, it's more that it might mean a cheaper wedding. If we all put in a few hundred pounds each then with the insurance money too we could save our cat and she could have another 10 years of life!

It IS a huge amount of money, but I believe we have a moral obligation to use the money we do have to help our pet - I keep crying about it, I can't imagine one of us driving her to the vets and coming back without her simply because we're not prepared to spend the money. The attitudes and comments of some people (who would happily spend the same amount on a holiday) have made me feel quite sad about the world. Would be interested to know others' views - is it just my social circle or is the general consensus that other things are more important?

I spent over 6,500 on my cat about six years ago. I had to sell my car to pay the vets bills. Totally worth it, as far as I'm concerned. I got six more fantastic years of cuddles from him, until I finally had to say goodbye to him in February this year.

I didn't have children then, though, so it wasn't a hard decision. Nowadays, with many more responsibilities (including a mortgage that I'm paying on my own) I would try my best to pay for what was needed but I might be forced to make a different decision.

Hope you manage to find a way through.

It’s not so much the money for me-although I know it’s a big issue. I just don’t believe in putting animals through painful and distressing treatment. They have no sense of time and no idea that they will get better or why people are hurting them. It’s a judgement call- but I would try to put the animal’s best interests first, not mine.

It really depends what you can afford, if you can find the money without losing the roof over your head then I probably would. I know I couldn't which is why my 2 are insured with as much cover as I could find, they're each covered for 15k per year and have lifetime cover. They're family. That being said if having the PTS is what you can afford then it's still humane and done with love.

We have about £5k put aside for Ddog.

I'd double check the costs. Ddog needed a scan and while one place quoted £1800 to £2500 a different one quoted £2500 - £5000 for the exact same procedure.

Lots of people wouldn't be able to afford it. When you take on responsibility of a living thing i think you have to do what's within your means to give them a good life. Only you can decide what's within your means.

I wouldn't be able to spend anywhere near that. We have spent a couple of hundred, and would again, but that is about it. Depending on payment plans etc I would not be able to pay more so it would be PTS sadly. We just don't have the money.

I would wait on ct scan results, I've just spent £1000s on my dog for cancer op, it's my responsibility to give her the best care.

Had to have my rabbit put down due to flystrike. The treatment would have cost too much and the vet said he may not make it. I’m still upset about it now but I simply didn’t have the money or any option to borrow. Struggling so much at the moment I just couldn’t do it 😔
