Just seen two very sweet female rats in pet shop - does anyone know about keeping them ?

Yep, they're dead easy to look after.

Just take them to a gutter or drainhole or close once the sun sets and let them loose.

They'll be fine.

ps: I think pet shops clean out their rodent cages almost daily, no potential buyer wants to see a lot of droppings, hence why aquariums might work okay for them.

Being serious, awful to dump domesticated rats in the outdoors.

Pet rats really aren't cut out for life in the outdoors, I know they're same species but it's like turning a chihuahua loose in Canadian tundra; technically timber wolves and chihuahua are same species, too..

Oh expat! How did I know you'd be here?

Yes they are easy to keep. We have two females. They are intelligent, affectionate and inquisitive. They have a large wire cage (I think it was a chinchilla cage) with 3 floors (wire but with lino on top to keep their feet safe). There is a sleeping box, a food bowl and a water bottle. We also put empty cardboard boxes and toilet roll tubes in for them to chew or nest in. They get taken out twice a day or so to run around the kids' beds and be cuddled and played with.
