Lowest maintenance pet?

My 6 yr old twins want a pet. I'm a single mum and work full time. Would love a dog but it's not practical at the moment.
Any ideas for a low maintenance pet (aside from the obvious goldfish!!!)

Yes, that's the recommended frequency.

Cats that hunt need to be worked every three months as they get tapeworm from eating mice.

Wormed even.

I’ve had a tortoise since I was 10. He was about 12 years old when I got him. I took care of him by myself-my parents would never help us with our pets. He’s always been free range around the garden, he needs feeding once a day and lets me know when it’s time to hibernate. People are always surprised how friendly he is-if I’m in the garden, he’ll come tanking over and follow me around. I’ve had him 32 years now-so he’s been a bit of a commitment! We’ve been through quite a lot together. 😀

they get tapeworm from eating mice.

But the most common tapeworm is from eating infected fleas.

They can also get other worms, to which they are exposed in the environment.

3 times a month? Not every 3 months?

Either way that's advice I have never been given by a vet in over 14 years.

Lweji · 21/01/2019 19:08

Every three months.

Cats literally look after themselves. My 2 kids have a cat each. They’re the best.
Hamster was horrid, was glad when that went! Stinking horrible thing. Fish tank is a pain in the ass to clean but I love having fish as I find them really relaxing.

Please do consider every aspect of pet ownership - can you afford insurance? Unexpected vet bills? Potential allergies? Who will look after them if you go on holiday? That animals despite their species /breed behaviour norms are individuals - could you cope with a pet who turns out to be shy/shuns being held? No one can predict the future but csn you still see yourself looking after this pet after the kids grow up or the novelty wears off?

My tortoise has been in the beer fridge hibernating for three months. Fairly low maintenance with a bit of research to get their habitat set up.

Mine are indoor cats should I worm them?
