Awaiting result on our poor staffie

On sunday we noticed he had a lump on his back knee so yesterday we took him to the vet to get it checked.

He seemed to think that it is probably a growth and could be removed but the main artury is running through it so it might be that he needs his leg off.

Then the vet said his lymph gland was swollen on the same side which is a sign of cancer so we will know tomorrow if he has to be put to sleep.

He is 9 in spetember and the biggest part of our family. How will we cope without him.

Aww hun... My grandparents have had staffies for years now - lovely dogs...

Really hope you get some good news tomorrow and keeping fingers crossed for you

Thanks.

We ahven't told the kids yet, thought it would be best to know the facts before we need to upset them.

Grandparents first one was a red called Leah and second one is white/red called Penny and she is seriously manic! Have to keep her away from DS as she sniffs the carpets so loud it makes him cry!! Bless!

any news?

tegan · 22/06/2007 17:42

Well the verdict is in.

He definately has cancer. due to the type and where it is the vet said he can't do anything just to enjoy the time we have left with him.

The cancer is agressive and will probably go to his lungs next and that will be the time to have him put to sleep.

Told dd's and dd1 is distraught to the point that she won't be in the same room as him at the mo.

So sorry to hear this - I know exactly how you are feeling. We had to have our 12 year old Springer put to sleep 10 days ago - it was heartbreaking. DS2 was still doing GCSE exams for another 3 days, so I decided not to tell him. DS1 & 3 were sworn to secrecy. We told DS2 he had been taken to the Vets (true really). I had to tell him when he had finished exams and he was really upset. saddest things were seeing his food bowls, lead and Teddy . I hope he keeps well for as long as possible.

The hardest thing is not knowing how long we have with him and what the signs are that he is getting worse.

My heart goes out to you tegan, i myself have two staffies both rescue 1 is 13 and the other is 2. My 13 year old 'old boy' follows me everywhere and has already survived one cancer scare so everyday is a blessing.
I know its early days yet but if and when the time comes to consider getting another staffy there is a very good staffy rescue in canterbury if anyone wants details i can forward.
meanwhile enjoy the time you have left with your little dog and spoil rotten!.
