I'm so so unhappy....I've lost two guinea pigs in just over a week....

I had to have William, my lovely black and white guinea pig put to sleep last week because he'd battled for over a month with abscess after abscess due to a sharp piece of hay getting stuck in the back of his eye...and today my grey and white female pig, Molly, has had to be put to sleep because she swallowed the wire that had hanging from it a sticky treat and it got stuck in her mouth causing a huge infection and again a huge abscess developed within hours. I'm not having a good time. I love all my guineas and to lose two in a week is just so upsetting....

Thanks speccy. I'm ok just very very sad. I'm such an animal person and to lose two of my pets in just a week is really hard - especially hard to explain to two children - one of which takes great care looking after the animals and a real hands-on kid.

I know it was just bad luck but I miss them both - mad as it may seem seeing their only g/pigs but well loved pets just the same.

Good luck with your little girl at the vets today - she'll be a bit miserable later on but loads of TLC and she'll be fine.

Hi nicky. Yes I love g/pigs too - have had them for years - they are such lovely friendly little characters and so full of fun. Losing one last week was bad enough but to lose another this week is just beyond belief and in such different circumstances too but with the same ending - abscesses - they are killers as far as g/pigs are concerned - they are difficult to deal with but so easy to get.

I've just put my 4 remaining pigs out in the garden and they're busy munching on grass and fresh dandelions so they're happy. Phew....!

i'm really sorry to hear about your loss. I too am a huge animal lover.

sending you a hug.

I lost my beloved bunny on june 23rd 8 yrs ago,he had to be put down due to an eyes prob, then his bunny freind had to be put down two weeks later, followed by my precious cat being run over also in that July.

I hurts so much. You will get thru it, but it must be awful having to explain it to your children.

take care

Yes it's not been easy explaining to the kids that yet again we've lost another pet - the elder child is the hardest because she is such a huge animal lover herself - she'll save a fly from a spiders web or pick a snail up from the middle of a path to avoid being trodden on!

She could see the one that died last week was ill and was ok-ish about that but the one put down yesterday went down hill so rapidly so different story again. She cried herself to sleep last night and got up just after 6 this morning to go out and feed the rest of the pigs with their usual greens and I could her telling them not to worry about Molly (the one pts yesterday) and that she'll be fine because she's up there in guinea pig heaven with William (the one pts last week) - it was enough to make me cry I can tell you!

I know its good that kids experience things such as death and loss etc but I know also my eldest (9yo) has been through a lot just recently - my dad died suddenly just over a year ago and she took that pretty hard because she was quite close to him and adored his company, as did he with her. We lost a rabbit at the beginning of this year too so all in all its been a tough time.

If I'm honest I do worry about her sometimes but what can I do? I can't shield her from situations like this - our pets are as much part of the family as she is - so whilst its all a very sad time at the moment I guess she'll get over it like she always does. Me? Well, every time I lose a pet I say I won't be getting any more and I've already had a 6mth old g/pig offered to me but do I really want to keep putting myself and the kids through the 'losing' bit?!

Speccy - that's lovely. I now have tears rolling down my face. That piece is exactly what I'm after - thank you sooo much - I'm going to print it off and give it to dd1 when she gets home from school. I can't thank you enough because when she got up this morning she was asking me loads of questions about how do the animals get better when they go to heaven etc etc.

THANK YOU....xx

Yes I will, thank you.

I've got a dog too - she's almost 12yrs old but she's a very fit and healthy elderly lady - I've had her since she was a puppy (rescue dog) so that'll be hard when we lose her but fortunately she's in good health and enjoys running to school with dd1 in the mornings and I mean RUNNING!

Let me know how your puppy is later on too. She'll not be your best friend when you go to pick her up.. but loads of cuddles and treats and she'll soon forgive you !!!

Oh bless her....make sure you pick up a victorian collar for her - the lampshade thingy - even though she won't be bothered by stitches today she'll be nibbling away at them by tomorrow!

I've just been out and given the four g/pigs a cabbage leaf each and they're all happy...I just keep thinking 'what next'? or rather 'who's next'?!!

I've now run out of cabbage and carrots so off to Sainsburys via school just to buy them some more bits - that's dedication for you!!

Let me know how puppy gets on - what's her name by the way?! Can't keep referring to her as 'puppy'!!
