Absolutely gutted - our new greyhound is having to go :o(

I'm absolutely gutted our new greyhound Murphy is going to have to go back.

For some reason he has developed a dislike to our 10 year old daughter, he's growling and snarling at her and we cannot take the risk.

I am so sad, I really love the dog but realise we can't have the risk of him hurting any of the children.

so sad at this moment.

sorry to hear that wangle.

oh no. How terribly for you.
I hope it hasn't put you off and that you find another suitable greyhound for you.

hercules1 · 15/06/2007 21:09

Dont let it put you off and try not to feel guilty. It's too much of a risk to take. I had a rescue dog last year that we had to take back and since then we've had 3 from puppies which we carefully checked background and socialised and trained ourselves. I feel so much happier.

We had to take back a lurcher- greyhound last year. She was the littermate of our current dog so thought she would also be fab-she bit my dd I think she needed to settle in differently, but still could not take the chance. It was a sad sad day and we still talk about her. Murphy will find a wonderful home where he is more comfy we now have another second dog, and it is the best thing we've done. It does suck though doesn't it? Good Luck

DH just taken Murphy to the kennels, feel so stupid for feeling so sad after only two weeks. Feel like a bit of me is missing!

There aren't any other suitable dogs available at the moment sadly.

I'm really sorry to hear that I understand - we only had our dog for 4 days and we were all devastated. My husband was sobbing when he dropped her off. It was for the best though, and we did get another (2nd) dog that was more suited to us. BTW, have you read "The dog Whisperer"? She had alot to say about settling animals in. I do feel that if we had settled ours in better, there would have been a better outcome.

purpleduck · 18/06/2007 13:25

Have you checked out the Dogs Trust? They always have tons of lurchers. You can't go by their website as its not updated all the time good luck!!

Purpleduck - haven't read the dog whisperer (never heard of it actually) but if you think it's worth it I'll get a copy.

Hadn't considered the Dogs Trust - there aren't any branches in Cornwall I don't think and also we paid £100 donation for Murphy and we can't really afford to pay another one to a different charity (we won't have to pay again for a different dog).

sigh still missing him big time. Keep thinking... another day closer to getting another one...

I wish i had read it before we had gotten our dog - i got a copy from the library. Have you considered a puppy? We were going to get a retired greyhound (i love greyhounds!!) but the guy at the dogs trust pointed out that their chase instinct is higher as they are encouraged to chase that rabbit thingy.(mine does have a high chase instinct, but not as bad i don't think) He felt that it could be difficult going for walks with the children. I was dead set against a puppy, but I am glad we got one (then another!!) as you can socialise them how you want. I hope another dog comes soon, ours has definately improved our lives!!

Purpleduck - trying to find Dog Whisperer book but there are loads, who is the author of yours? thanks.

Oh dear, how awful for you

I admire you for doing the right thing, of course, but it must be really upsetting.

Haribosmum · 19/06/2007 21:08

I know how you feel. We adopted alovely dog back in Jan who was great...apart from when he saw the cat. He just saw red and went for her. Had her pinned on her back with him teeth in her belly. Luckily no damage (well there was blood but even the vet couln't work out where it was coming from). Anyway we took him back and got our BC bitch Belle. She is an absolute gem. She's moving to New Zealand with us next week. So don't give up hope, the right dog WILL come along.

purpleduck · 19/06/2007 22:24

Wangle, it is by Jan Fennel and Monty Roberts. I didn't realise there were so many!!! Enjoy!!

wangle99 · 20/06/2007 20:21

Thanks purpleduck have found it on amazon but am popping into waterstones on Saturday so will check it out there.

Feeling really sad and frustrated, have found loads of dogs on other rescue sites that would be suitable but because we have paid the donation to Retired Greyhounds can't afford to go elsewhere.

Amazing really as 10,000 greyhounds need rehoming per year - I worked that out at 27 per day and they can't find one for me lol

Have just spoken to the head dog lady, Murphy is being rehomed on Sunday to a family without children. I so hope he fits in there.

There is a new consignment of dogs coming down to Cornwall on Thursday so please keep your fingers crossed there is on suitable for us!
