Am I being mean?

Ok so we have 2 kittens (just over 4months old) they are very lovely and well behaved.

I go to work at 9 and generally get home after school run at about 3:30 I now only work 3 days a week. They have plenty of toys and attention when we are home, they always have access to food and water throughout the day and generally have the run of the house except the kitchen.

They are due to be neutered and I will start the process of letting them out, but I’m worried that they are getting bored and I’m being quite mean by keeping them in and also going to work!

It was fine at first but now they just ‘look’ like they’ve been bored and have an abandoned look on their faces when we leave and when we return. I think they have started to act this out by having a few bits of bad behaviour (pooing just outside of a CLEAN litter tray, peeing on my rug etc) they will be going outdoors when they are all set and old enough. Personally I don’t think they would even survive outside atm they aren’t exactly the brightest of cats. What do I do??

The fact they're peeing on rugs etc could be them both marking their territories from each other. That can happen, should sort itself out once they get neutered. I think it's normal to worry they're not okay and content enough but I think it's a good thing they've got each other and I'm sure they play around together when you're not in. They'll sleep a lot too I imagine. But the whole peeing/pooing on things makes sense with 2 males and territory. Once they get neutered and get out you'll see a difference. They're going through the rowdy teenager stage by the sound of it. Hang in there

Forgot to say about the whole letting them out thing. I would wait till they were over 6 months at least to start letting them out. They're not adults yet and still learning. I made that mistake letting my wee cat out before she was a year old and I deeply regret it as she's not here with me anymore

Thank you for replying and I’m sorry to hear about your kittie!!!

I know it is all part of the package but if I’m being honest it’s getting me a bit down and I’ve tried everything to eliminate it. The house smelling like pee even though I clean thoroughly and I’m starting to think I made a mistake and I’m not cut out for it. To make it worse I’ve just found fleas on them! How I don’t know! I work in a garden centre so perhaps they came in via me but now the process of defleaing them and my house..... I love them dearly but I am horribly I know starting to regret it.

Boys or girls?
How many litter trays? Should have one each (ideally plus a spare!)
What litter are you using? Do they object to how it feels?
Any chance of a UTI or food upsetting tummies?
Find some fun (laser pointer for cats or scrunched up paper or small soft ball to bounce downstairs)
Re going out can you cat proof the garden or build a run? They need to come in at night anyway and it’ll be some time after neutering that they can go out.
Also worth microchipping too.

Honestly I know how you feel. I felt that way with mine. I wondered what I had gotten myself in for but slowly she turned into the best cat il probably ever have. It's frustrating. Everybody I speak to has mentioned their cats/dogs having fleas, apparently they're a lot more hardy this year for some reason. I've only just managed to get rid of fleas in our house and I didn't even have a cat at the time! Grab some spot on and hoover the house from top to bottom and they should be gone Smile. Are they both boys?

Wolfiefan · 19/09/2018 22:29

Spot on treatment needs to be from the vet. (Not frontline) You must apply each month.
And indorex house (if safe with such young kittens in the place.)
Have they seen a vet? Aren’t you flea and worm treating?

weelis02 · 19/09/2018 22:29

P.s you're not horrible for feeling that way x

Fadingawayagain · 19/09/2018 22:46

Thanks guys for the replies.

We have one boy one girl both of 4 months. 2 litter trays. Gone through many litters finding the one they like. Feed them James well beloved. They live the laser thing. Honestly I do all I think I can do. I do treatment, where I work we have a pet department I’m forever in. I just think they are bored.

Thanks for the tips, advice and kind words x

OTC treatment? Doesn’t work and can even be dangerous. Need stuff from vets.
Dry or wet food? Dry gave our boy issues which led to him peeing round the house.
Our current girls have wet and dry.
With a boy and a girl I hope that neutering is soon. Shock

Fadingawayagain · 20/09/2018 11:29

I have stuff from the vets and they have been this morning. It’s not my boy that pees on the rug it’s my girl. They are on both wet and dry James well beloved. Yes I am aware that boy and girl needs to be neutered and as I said we are due in soon.

You need three litter trays with two cats - one per cat and one spare, ideally all in separate, secluded parts of the house.

What are you using to clean up accidents?

weelis02 · 20/09/2018 23:36

How are you getting on OP? How have the kittens been today?

hobblesma · 20/09/2018 23:49

We have one boy one girl both of 4 months.

I would separate them right away.

Hoppinggreen · 25/09/2018 17:54

They can mate at 4 months by the way
