What do you feed your cats on?

Just that really. I had a wee cat before and I just bought dry food and meat pouches but felt they were really expensive.
Looking to take on 2 kittens soon and looking to see if there's better deals for food that are still good for them?

We don't feed any wet food, they just wasted it. Ate a tiny mouthful from the middle, maybe licked the jelly off. Went dry and manky, stunk in the summer. Always a half used can with a disgusting cat food fork stuck in it on the side. Hated it.

We switched them to grain free kibble, cats are obligate carnivores and wouldn't eat grain in the wild. Applaws is one of the best but expensive, we use either the Arden Grange or James Wellbeloved, whichever is on offer, and we have the pets at home VIP card so get £3 off £30 voucher each month, we just stock up when they come through. All three cats much happier and healthier, skinny cat put on weight, fat cat lost weight, baby is sturdy and growing well and fur is in much better condition, less smelly poops, much less vomiting which they used to do all the time.

Weirdly, after we changed to grain free they all started refusing 'junk' treats, like the chew sticks they used to love. Dreamies do a grain free treat that come in 5 little packets in a box, that's all they will have now. The food itself is more expensive than the cans and kibble they used to have because they only ever liked the cheap stuff before, but they waste so much less that I think it works out about the same, plus we will save in vet bills long term.

One of my cats is a little chunky so they both get Pro Plan light. Goes down a treat. Every other night they get a pouch of Sheba split between them. I've tried them on various other wet food both cheaper and more expensive but that's the favourite.

Dry food only, Royal Canin. Expensive but the b**y spoilt cats won’t eat anything else! As a result they have a great teeth and shiny soft coats and they’re 13! It was recommended by our vet as when we got them (at 1) they had ropey teeth..

Thanks for your replies. How much a month does it usually cost you cat food wise?

Royal Canin - a huge bag costs about £30 but lasts 2 months. It used to last 4 months when cat was smaller. I supplement with raw fresh meat and raw and cooked chicken just cut off our food as I'm preparing it. And tuna once a week.

thethoughtfox · 13/09/2018 18:22

Don't go near GoKat:we bought it once when we almost ran out of food and our delivery was delayed. It makes their poo soft and stink the house out.

Tronkmanton · 13/09/2018 18:25

Iams dry food- I buy in 10kg bags from zooplus online, much cheaper than supermarket little packs. Our cats always have beautiful shiny coats.

2 indoor cats eating Royal Canine, one for adult, another for a kitten. Only a "kitten" (ok 1 year old lump) eats wet food - Waitrose chicken in tin.
We don't have kids, no massive expenses so can spend on that. If you plan to have a lot of cats, perhaps costs will come into account. Usually huge sacks are more value for money.

I personally think the fewer cats the better as they need space, might hate each other etc, but it's your home and your cats so hope you'll find the best solutions for 3 cats household.

Dodie66 · 20/09/2018 13:31

Royal canin. £30 every couple of months. I buy from amazon and get free delivery. Fetch also do delivery

MrsRubyMonday · 20/09/2018 13:33

Each bag of food is around £10 for 2kg and we go through around a bag every week and a half, give or take a few days. So about £30 a month.

Whiskas and go cat. She gets 1/3 of a tin of whiskas at night time (not in the day as she won’t eat it when there are people about and it goes manky). Go cat in a bowl that is always topped up. Never left empty. She’s not a big eater and she’s now 8 and well. Not sure how her poo is as she does that outside. She gets occasional scraps too, grated cheese and tuna mayonnaise are her favourites.

Redken24 · 20/09/2018 13:44

James well beloved dry food 10kg maybe 6 months ? At forty pound a bag works out well. Cat always shiny and plump

TeaMeBasil · 20/09/2018 13:47

James Wellbeloved biscuits & Gourmet Perle wet food, she seems happy 😊

cinders15 · 20/09/2018 16:43

TeameBasil - mine too - they are now 5 and have turkey biscuits and gourmet perle wet - but only the gravy ones - definitely not jelly!!

adaline · 20/09/2018 17:45

Wainwrights or Lily's Kitchen biscuits, and then Nature's Menu wet.

weelis02 · 20/09/2018 17:56

Thanks for all your replies. Just to clarify @BloodyDisgrace, I don't have my cat anymore, lost her a wee while ago when she got knocked down. I'm looking into getting 2 kittens now so I would just have the 2

BloodyDisgrace · 20/09/2018 18:39

weelis02 sorry to hear about your cat. Hope you'll find some awesome kittens.

weelis02 · 20/09/2018 19:04

Thank you :)

Chrisinthemorning · 20/09/2018 19:05

Royal Canin dry, bought in bulk from zooplus.

bengalcat · 20/09/2018 19:08

Whiskas/Felix/fish/chicken and hills science diet biscuits - so a mixture really - and always need to share crispy fried duck if we have it

BlankTimes · 20/09/2018 19:33

Frozen fish, usually pollock or basa always cooked. Raw and cooked chicken, raw turkey mince, a few prawns, tuna in sunflower oil, sardines.

GreenMeerkat · 20/09/2018 19:46

My cat will ONLY eat go cat crunchy and tender dry food. I have tried everything, even the premium brands but this is all he will eat.

He also has pouches of wet again he will ONLY eat Felix as good as it looks. He's a massive pain!
