Advice about dog cages/crates

Hi
Our qo mth old Springer Spanial (Badger) is driving us mad. He constantly jumps onto the kitchen table when we are out, in fact we think he is sleeping on there at night now! Have tried putting all the chairs on there but is still wriggles between them, you have to admire his skill. As we live next to a river the table is constantly covered in bits of mud which is not very nice, also we have to move everysingle item before we go out.

We are now thinking about a cage or crate for night-times and maybe when we are out. Would also be useful for in the car as he jumps around everywhere and for when we go camping (going to be interesting!) so he doesn't have to sleep in the bed section.

However there are so many cages out there I don't know where to start. They all claim to be the best! The lady at our kennels who has working springers recommended the more solid plastic sort, like the airline ones I think but I can't help feeling they look a bit too enclosed.

Any suggestions or tips either on cages, crates or keeping him off the table?
Thanks

Forgot to add, those metal spikes mentioned ealier can be bought from pets at home. We just tie our dog on a rope round the washing pole when we are out in the garden...we have open gardens, lots of cats to chase etc, safer all round. Recall is getting better though, hoping he will be allowed to run free one day (in a sensible controlled manner...!) (wink)

Agree with speccy, do they have to go in a crate? Would they not just stay in the boot? (presuming you have an estate or similar?)

My boy had not travelled in a box until we got him. I feel it is safer for him as he can't pootle about and get hurt if we brake suddenly.
We had this dog guard for previous dog, and it was great.
With a box we can have boot open to get buggy etc organised, then release the hound on an unsuspecting world .

go with what you think best for your own dogs

For anyone you takes their dog in a car, i found out recently that it is a legal requirement to have a suitable restraint for your dog when in the car. There seem to be 3 options, dog guard, crate or seatbelt harness thing!

magnolia1 · 07/06/2007 18:02

Fio, we have a harness for each dog and we anchor it to the side of the car. Dh found all sorts of places to attach it when he llokd. You can get car harnesses which also have a lead tpye bit aswell so they can lay down or sit up but not enough slack to jump out or around ect...

this is the commonest available harness. Found it on Pets at Home site.
Zooplus have this one too.
Tesco have this , but looks small.
If you do a Google search for 'dog car harness' you will find loads

magnolia1 · 07/06/2007 20:08

Yes pets at home (used to be petsmart) d them

You more than welcome to come borrow it, and it's find for a s-spaniel.
Ours is wire, plastic would be too hot in summer
