Do you allow your pets to go on kitchen tops?

Hello everyone. Do you have some strict rules re: kitchen tops/surfaces?

I'm afraid our 2 indoor cats go there, I wipe it (no detergent though). If we had kids I'd be more germ-aware and the cats won't be allowed, but we are probably some "slum people" :))

DH has an allergy to the younger cat, so both of them aren't allowed to the bedroom (he took some antihistamins at the beginning), but he lets them in when he gets up for work so they can sleep next to me for the next couple of hours. I de-fluff the bed and change the linen every 2 weeks.

But, all in all, the puss pretty much runs (and reigns in) the household. Here are the buggers:

Have you tried to stop them from climbing the kitchen counter as it can become annoying especially when cooking!

If you are having trouble then this article is a great read!

Hope this helps :)

stressedoutpa · 23/08/2018 23:18

No! In the same way I wouldn't climb on the kitchen worktops in my outdoor shoes. It's not hygienic.

Ours tries every once in a while and gets told off.

Vinorosso74 · 23/08/2018 23:22

We don't allow it but being a cat he does it anyway. I wipe the sides before cooking Maybe we should allow it and then he won't?

DramaAlpaca · 23/08/2018 23:28

I don't like it & don't allow it, but I suspect DCat gets up there occasionally when we aren't around. He knows that if he tries it when we are there he gets swiped off immediately.

When I was growing up my DMum had our two cats trained not to jump up on work tops. I've no idea how she did it. She didn't manage to train our clever boy cat out of opening the fridge door with his paws though Grin

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 23/08/2018 23:29

I have rules. My cats have hollow laughs Hmm Grin

Perfectly1mperfect · 23/08/2018 23:31

Definitly not.

I love cats but they do some pretty disgusting things so I definitely draw the line with them on worktops. Our cat has never even tried to get up there.

reetgood · 23/08/2018 23:33

I am very much nope about cats on kitchen counters. Have never had one so determined that they managed to make it a habit.

Oth, I’m very relaxed about them on our bed. Something about the food contaminant thing probably.

GlitterGlassEye · 23/08/2018 23:41

My dm has had cats all of my life, (so about 14, she has them in pairs) and not 1 has ever went on the kitchen worktops.

It was a rude awakening going into my friends house recently and her cat jumped off the top of the living room door!

Rebecca36 · 23/08/2018 23:45

I don't allow it but they do it anyway.

Ohyesiam · 23/08/2018 23:47

You change your bed lined every two weeks?

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 23/08/2018 23:50

Ours dont at the moment. They went through a phase of it but it’s not one of their current trends. Give it a few months and I’m sure they’ll be back up there...walked in on one kitten licking the side of the butter dish once Shock

Your cats are gorgeous. Is the one on the left a cream British shorthair?

cakedup · 23/08/2018 23:56

Your cats are gorgeous! I've always had cats and currently have two, never allowed them to go on kitchen counters. I even close the kitchen door when I go out because I know they'd be on there as soon as I was out the door.

My cats sleep on my bed every night and I really do feel changing bed linen should be once a week at least!

Toddlerteaplease · 27/08/2018 18:03

If your grey cat is a persian I'm amazed it can get onto your worktop. Mine can't climb!

AlwaysFuckingTired · 27/08/2018 18:22

I wouldn't want to mess with the grey one.

FourteenCows · 27/08/2018 18:28

I don’t actively allow it but with two needy kittens it’s virtually impossible to stop them. I take them off whenever I see them up there but they don’t care of course. I just clean it a lot!

BloodyDisgrace · 29/08/2018 13:38

Thank you everyone, I didn't even think people would reply so wasn't checking the thread...
OK, I dig the general consensus. The grey puss (older one) wasn't allowed on kitchen tops before we got the younger kitten. He pisses her off and I relaxed the rule a bit so she can get away from him. And I don't want to stress her by banning her going somewhere. (She has good high spots in the house though)

Yep. She's an infernal entity who compresses the matter, absorbs light and sound waves and eats souls. It really is the case when the face matches personality (unlike The Grumpy Cat who is actually a very sweet puss).

Toddlerteaplease

The grey one is an exotic shorthair. She jumps quite well.

cakedup thank you :) And yes, when one has cats who sleep on the bed, I'm afraid, one has to change bed linen more often than no-cat households.

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken - thank you :)
Is the one on the left a cream British shorthair? He is a cross between Persian Dad and Brit. Shorthair Mum. Really cheeky sod.

We have successfully taught two generations of kitties that human food is not interesting to cats (by the simple method of never letting them have anything from our plates or leftovers).

I think it's because of this they very rarely jump on the surfaces - almost exclusively when chasing flies around during the summer days and concentrating so hard on bug murder they don't care where they go!

We wipe down the surfaces in the morning before use anyway though.

Desmondo2016 · 29/08/2018 13:46

I think the point raised about the fortnightly bed changing was more about you ONLY doing it every 2 weeks.

It's a weekly job WITHOUT pets!!

BloodyDisgrace · 29/08/2018 13:47

Ohyesiam
You change your bed lined every two weeks?

I do. Sometimes it's 3 weeks. It's because they fluff the bed up, which I de-fluff, and not to accumulate allergens which set my husband's cough off. We had a choice: no cats in the bedroom or letting them in, so changing bed linen that often comes with the latter option. I have time to do it, being a housewife.

Desmondo2016 - every week?? You heroes ... :))))

OP posts:
FutureDays · 29/08/2018 13:51

I don't allow it, but they do it anyway because they are a bunch of arses, I have a spray bottle in the kitchen and everytime I see them on the side I squirt them, I think one of the cats actually enjoys it the little git
