Charlie (famously adopted mn cat) is peeing everywher but where she should - any advice?

She's a fairly nervous cat anyway and we've had major building works going on over the past few months. She has had the occasional slip up in the past, but this is now almost a daily occurance. Ronnie (her adopted mate) was doing it too, but has now settled down again and goes outside mainly. We do have a litter box in the house which she does use, but today she peed right beside it!!

Now I can understand that the upheaval will have contributed to her problem, and the building work is drawing to a close now with just a few bits left to finish off. What on earth can I do though if she continues this after things return to normal?

Any helpful advice will be appreciated muchly!!

TIA

sounds daft and have never had a cat but could it have a uti? thats why people go more

Aero · 03/06/2007 22:40

Thanks katz. I don't think she's going more than usual tbh, just that she's refusing to use her 'toilet' or go outside. She doesn't go out much and that's ok, but if she continues this, she'll be put out a lot more often so there's less chance she'll go in the house!

She doesn't appear to be ill at all though and is eating and drinking normally and has no other obvious symptoms.

I wish I knew the answer Aero because we've suffered this on and off for years and years. It's much better than it was - I remember being woken at 4 in the morning by her peeing in the corner of the bedroom. Now she's settled on a spot in the kitchen next to her litter tray. VERY annoying but at least it's not carpet.

One thing that has sometimes helped is having two litter trays in case one isn't to her liking. But our kitchen's so small that we had to give up and go back to one.

Such a big head I thought you were talking about me

I wonder if a new litter tray would help. We love having cats, honestly, we do, but I can't have her ruining the house when there's a regularly cleaned out 'loo' there for her to use!! You can't leave anything lying around either - she's peed on schoolbags, washing that hasn't made it to the laundry basket yet, shoes left on the floor etc.

charliecat · 03/06/2007 23:51

Erm, my charliecat was peeing everywhere and it turned out hes diabetic. He was also hanging out down the loo drinking tho

BishyBarneyBee · 03/06/2007 23:53

our cat will only go in the litter box if it is completely clean so have to change it all the time.

They go where they can smell they have gone before. You can get a spray called 'get off' and it puts them off going there but smells horrid to me too.

I have a bottle of christain dior 'dolce vita' that I can't wear as DP desn't like it. I sprinkle that over places he has gone that are wrong and he gets the message.

Aero · 03/06/2007 23:54

Perhaps I should have her seen then, just in case.

Did your cat need to change diet etc if he is diabetic? Our Charlie does dring a lot of water.

OP posts:
charliecat · 03/06/2007 23:56

Erm, I need to inject him twice a day
I have also put him on one brand of food instead of swapping every week depending on price.
The vet would probably like him on expensive diet but can see by my face I cant really afford the insulin.

Aero · 03/06/2007 23:56

Oh, I have a few redundant bottles of perfume I could try spraying where she's deposited her pee, but I'm not sure I want the place reeking of perfume either - gotta be better than cat pee though!

OP posts:
BishyBarneyBee · 03/06/2007 23:58

yeah - the perume can be a bit overwhelming but between that and cat pee...

Aero · 04/06/2007 00:11

Yup - perfume wins every time - have just doused floor. Smells quite nice actually. Hopefully Charlie won't agree!

Best let her in now and go to bed. Hopefully she'll have emptied her bladder outside for the night!

BishyBarneyBee · 04/06/2007 12:35

how's your floor?

Aero · 04/06/2007 21:11

Hmm - she peed on a piece of kitchen paper today which somehow got left on the floor! She knows she's in trouble though because she's avoiding me at all costs if she remotely suspects I'm going to unceremoniously chuck her out for several hours.

BishyBarneyBee · 04/06/2007 22:32

hmmm - not great but not awful.

Put ;loads of kitchen paper in litter tray???

lucyellensmum · 04/06/2007 23:00

aero, im sorry to hear about your cats piddling problems. I do think it needs investigating if it is something new. Some people have mentioned diabetes and you have said that she is drinking loads too. Also, she could have an infection. You did mention that you had some upheaval with the builders etc, might she not have gone out to pee in that time? if so she could have developed a retention cystitis. Another common problem in cats is crystals developing in the bladder which can irritate the lining of the bladder and cause them to pee more. All of these things are treatable so dont worry. Also, it might not be any of those things but just habbit. If you could get a urine sample to your vets then these things could be ruled out, most of them anyway. You can get some special cat litter that allows the collection of urine but if she is refusing to wee in there then that might be a problem. If push comes to shove the vets can get the sample for you.

With regards to her going elsewhere, cats will return to where they have been before as they can detect the scent. To be honest, most of the stuff on the market such as pet fresh are shite and using disinfectant etc can often make it worse! To get rid of the smell, remember her smell is much more acute than ours, clean the area with BIOLOGICAL washing up liquid and then when dry dab the area with methylated spirits (no need to waste the channel no 5!!!) - this will break down any of the trace fats and proteins in the wee and destroy any odour and hopefully stop her repeating her naughties. To encourage her to use her litter tray again you could try putting earth or compost in it (seems to work in my bloody garden, all the local cats love it - grrrr) and she may start to use it again.

Best of luck xx

Aero · 06/06/2007 22:25

Wow - thanks lucyellensmum for a very useful post. With the area (in my new loo) she peed in yesterday, I used bicarb to try and absorb the smell a bit and then put down a little perfume. Also, my builders have finally hung the door, so now she can't go in there (hooray). She's been ok today and hasn't peed anywhere (yet), at least not that I've found anyway.

We've also had a cat-flap installed, so I'm going to try and encourage her to use that. As far as I know there was one in their previous home (they arrived with magnets on collars), so as soon as the builders are done, I'll try to train her. Up until the building work began, they used to come and go via a small kitchen window, but that has now gone and she's so nervous of all the change, that I'm almost certain the building work is waht has triggered this problem. The work should be complete by the end of next week, so if no improvement after they've gone, then it's a trip to the vet for her, to rule out any medical probllem.

oops - that's 'problem'!

BreeVanDerCamp · 06/06/2007 22:28

So who did you adopt her from ??

Memory suggests either Beety of Magnolia 1, memory also suggests I could be wrong.

Aero · 07/06/2007 17:24

Lol - second memory suggestion correct - you are wrong. It was Blossom2, although I think she may have namechanged (lot of that going on . We've had them about 2.5 years now.
