Help-cats are bringing us unwelcome presents

We have had our kittens since last october. We have a male and a female and both have been done!! The last few months they have been bringing us presents night and day. Birds alive and dead and mice mainly dead or on their last legs.
We have to shut them in the kitchen at night and we have tried shutting the cat flap up so they cannot get out at night but they manage to force it open. Also they are bringing the presents in at all times of the day and not just in the morning.
Will they grow out of it? It is driving me mad never knowing what to expect in the morning. It is also heartbreaking too, mwe managed to rescue a bird that one of the cats had been playing with and got it to the vet but he died during the night. Most of the birds and mice they get are babies too

I think that is the nature of cats. Ours do it was well - that is why our neighbour hates us! You could try a collar. it does get better as they older (and lazer!)

have they got bells?

DaisysGotSausageFeet · 03/06/2007 20:30

Apparently this is your cats way of thanking you for looking after it.....and it'll probably continue. Cats can be very cruel and will catch things to play with rather than becuase they need to food!

My friends cat has reached a whole new level though...she has realised that dead mice and birds don;t go down very well, so usually brings bcak some detritus from other peoples bins like chicken legs and chop bones etc!

Not much you can do i am afraid!

Apart from put a bell on a collar like foxinsocks said.

Mine have brought all kinds home, including a rat (which looked more like a rabbit! the size of it) and a mole! tis a nightmare but they do chill out when they get a bit older.

pucca · 03/06/2007 20:33

Oh and no one warned me, but if they get a toad or a frog they squeal like a pig! very very loudly, i wondered what the hell it was!

Have got them collars with bells on but both of them have managed to lose them. I know it is presents for me and DH but I would much prefer chocolate or wine as a present and keep telling them so...lol.
I suppose I will just have to grin and bear it until they decide they are too lazy. I must admit that it freaked me out in the beginning but have become a dab hand at disposing of birds and mice.

Apparently you should praise them otherwise they'll keep bringing in bigger and better "gifts" for you.

We had a cat that, amongst other things, brought in earth worms, half a jam tart and a carrier bag of rubbish.

I used to have a cat that used to bring me 'presents' and the feathered variety she used to pluck all over the lounge during the night. Despite hanging everything but a 2 tonne bell around her neck she still managed to catch birds, mice, voles etc.,. This was when I was pregnant wih ds2 and I rehomed her to a couple on a farm. It was just too much to deal with at the time.

I have one who makes friends with every creature she finds and another who kills everything small enough for her to catch but doesn't bring them in. I worry for the 2 ducks that have taken residence on the green opposite my house. I just know I'm going to have one on my doorstep soon .

I managed to rescue a field mouse a while back and nursed it back to health with a chip, chocolate button and cotton wool soaked with water before releasing it
