Am trying to find a new dog food, and I'm after suggestions.

Also, how much do you a pay a month on dog food and the size of dog you have.

TIA

My dog has tried many foods but the one that suits him best is Eukanuba Lamb & Rice. He's still on the junior one even though he's 14 months old as I was recommended to keep him on that till he's about 18/20 months. It costs us £42 per 15kg bag including delivery, which lasts us about 2 months. Our dog is a labradoodle, so about the height of a labrador but slimmer.

My Springer gets Chappie complete dry food. He had a dodgy tummy when he came to us due to being overfed on a very rich food.
He is now fit, healthy and happy.
I recommend Chappie because I've not found as good a food since it was launched.

Costs around £12.99 for 15kg and lasts us around 3 months.
It comes in Original or Chicken varieties and is available in most pet shops.
They also do a 2.5kg bag for around £2.99 if you wanted a trial

hi we use to feed ours on bakers compleate £23 for a big bag but my other half went to tescos the other week and their own brand (not the cheap cheap one) is just the same ingred as bakers and there big bags are £7 same size as bakers @ £23 and they love it and my dogs are really fussy woth a try or go and have a look they do a small box for next to nothing so you can try it

sparklygothkat · 30/06/2007 00:08

We have just had to change our dog food, as Bakers was making him hyper and also gave him very bad wind. He is now on James wellbeloved (from pets at home, on the recommendation from the training school) cost me £13 for 5kg. I will let you know how he does on it.

handlemecarefully · 30/06/2007 00:12

Mines on james wellbeloved too. Haven't a clue how much I spend on dog food. She had regular bouts of diarrhoea prior to switching to current food

TMI ALERT!!!!
I feed my dog Burns (any flavour suits him). It's £18.60 for 7.5kg which lasts about a month. We used to feed him Bakers, but I was convinced to shift after we had frequent loose poo's which were difficult to pick up. Burns sorted all that out and now we have compact and firm small poos which, as the little mole might say, I almost find appealing . It's all relative though

purplemonkeydishwasher · 30/06/2007 11:03

we use james wellbeloved lamb and rice for ours.this is it we buy a bag every 2 weeks or so.
it would be chaper in the long run to buy the BIG bag but we have no where to store it.

MuffinMclay · 30/06/2007 14:50

After trying a few types, I settled on Burns for my springer (duck flavour). He has much smaller and more solid poo now.
I buy it from their website. About £38 for 15kg sack (inc delivery). Lasts him 2 months.

bitzermaloney · 01/07/2007 14:35

Just go for something without sugar/ colouring/stuff that's purely in it to bulk it out, as it can really affect their behaviour and make them poo loads. If it looks pretty it is probably crap.

Different foods suit different dogs... mine do brilliantly on Autarky (£15 per 15kg sack from CSJK9 online, or £11 I believe if you have a Costco nearby). It's not the same as Autarky Gusto, which is vastly inferior and can be bought in Tesco I think.
www.autarky-foods.co.uk/home.htm

Mostly the good quality foods (Burns, JWB, etc.) do cost more, but there are a few exceptions and Autarky is one IMO. Chappie is great value for money too. Also Butcher's.

Macdog · 02/07/2007 19:26

We bought a cheap plastic dustbin and use that to store the big bag outside. It is water and rodent proof

GeekBoy · 03/07/2007 12:05

Black working labrador...
...feed him Gilpa working dog dry food. around £11/15Kg and lasts around 1 month...

newlifenewname · 03/07/2007 12:08

Supermarket brands are real rubbish. And vets do not get full training on nutrition and feeding ( I am told) so tend to recommend whatever they are sponsored to sell or stock.

I REALLY recommend Burns as do many professionals in doddy circles. It is a very efficient, additive free diet that gives a nutritional balance without giving the dog surplus calories and therefore energy/hyepractivity or leading to weight problems.

If you Google Burns Nutrition you will find stockists. Local vets can often order in.

newlifenewname · 03/07/2007 12:10

By the way, Burns works out cheaper than most common brands because it is more efficient and so you must be very careful about feeding as per guidelines. You get a Burns measure cup and if you stick to that your dog will be healthy and your food will last ages.

We had our dog weighed after 6 months on Burns and she was a perfect weight.

worzsel · 03/07/2007 14:56

Black Lab, Fed Gusto.. £5.50 for 15kg and that lasts a about 5 weeks. I used to feel the premium stuff and that costs £25 a month but he seems to be doing just as well on the cheap stuff and my bank balence is healthier
