My dp's cat gotover next doors garden like cats do and their dog think is a jack russel chased it we're not sure if it got hold of her. There's no blood but her back right leg looks floppy but she can move and put a tiny bit of weight on it.

I can't get hold of my vet, so have to take her in the morning.

How much do you reckon this is gonna cost me i have insurance. but wanted to know roughly.

ta .

I know its not whats happened to your cat, but it will give you an idea of worst case scenario - My neighbours cat got knocked over by a car recently -an emergency op (to pin leg etc) on a Saturday afternoon cost her approx £500.

Aloveheart · 03/06/2007 14:36

not sure it's as bad as beeing knocked she's putting abit of weight on it not dragging it

But gosh as much as that??

thanks for your reply.

If shes putting weight on it hopefully it may just be sprained or, if broken, may be able to be set without the need for an op.

Good luck

Cost depends on a lot of things - where you live, if leg is actually broken and if so, how badly. Best case scenario (if broken) - plaster of paris/support dressing - prob about £200 initially, then additional costs for dressing changes. Worst case scenario (if bad, complicated break) - much metalwork, could cost about £1000 initially, but not much after that.

If cat putting weight on it, prob not broken. Might be much better in the morning, but def get it checked.

Insurance should cover almost everything, will just have to pay excess. Although after that your premiums will go up.

Just be grateful you have insurance and you can get the best done for your cat.

HTH

Thanks so much yep i do have insurance and i'm so glad i took it out. I know i have to pay an excess and that's not a worry just feel sorry for the poor mite. She's a very timid cat so and it was her first time she ventured outside of the back step and that happened. That's life though i suppose.

Thanks for your info.

my cat was shot last year which shattered hi leg into 10 pieces, he had to have a metal pin put in, and it cost £1800 in total. when we went to the vet at first the vet thought he had been hit by a car and broken his leg and quoted me about £500. My vet dealt direct with my insurance company so I didn;t have to find the money straight away

We thought our cat had broken leg....couldn't put weight on it....swollen etc...i was convinced it was broken!

Luckily though, she had a bite (that was barely visible) and was soon sorted!!!

Hope your cat gets well soon.

talcy0 · 03/06/2007 21:31

Thank goodness for pet insurance...

spent about 1500 last year alone

Aloveheart · 04/06/2007 11:26

bloody hell!!! well she's cost me £30 so far just for the vet to look at her and give her a pain relieft injection got to take her back tommororw for possible x ray if she's no better it's her knee the vet thinks. poor chicken.

good luck with her!

btw.....£1500 spent on thyroid...not leg bite, previously mentioned!

Aloveheart · 05/06/2007 20:20

Update....Spent £180 so far she went in this morning for an x-ray to see if her leg was broken, her hip has a slight break but vet said it should heal itself because she's very young. Looks like from what the vet said that the dog did get her because she has crushed part on her pelvis. the vet spaded her to,and gave me some flea treatment . She's doing well but has to wear a collar to stop her getting at the stiches her leg isn't right still and she has to be confined to one room and she's not allowed to jump down or up etc. Which is really hard because you can't be home 24/7. she's been so brave bless her.

Thanks for the update.... glad it wasn't worse.

Hope she gets well soon!!!

MeAndMyMonkey · 05/06/2007 23:01

Glad your poor cat is ok... mine had broken leg and cost best part of a thousand [gulp].
But was worth it. You did the right thing

sparklygothkat · 05/06/2007 23:12

My cats leg cost £1800 so you have been veery lucky. If you are finding it hard to stop her jumping, you may want to consider a cage for a few weeks. My cat was caged for 4 months while his leg healed

Aloveheart · 07/06/2007 13:14

yeah the vet said that she shouldn't need to put her in cage and seh's not jumping at all really, she's alot better it wasn't completely broken just a crack and crushed where the dog must have bit her. I doubt she'll go out again though, sigh.

so good she does not have to be in a cage though. Mine got hit by a car and cracked her pelvis. 6 weeks in a cage - it was heart breaking and she has not been the same since.

Hope your cat is okay.
