cat getting too wild?

tigi · 29/05/2007 19:18

Hi, my cat (aged 1.5) ate a whole (yes whole) rabbit yesterday. Fur and all. Nothing left - not that I've found anyway! She brought it to my back door, which was fortunatly closed (!) and ate it there. gag. I feed her often. She is a bit fussy to me (but not 2 younger children or dh) and ds age 12. And rather timid. My mum says she shouldn't eat rabbits like this, and is getting wild... is she right do you think? Shall I keep her in more, which seems a shame, as we live next to fields. She often catches mice to play with (sometimes eats) and birds for the fun of it. Got her a collar, and it makes no difference! Any advice? Thanks

God yes I would have as well! No, I don't think she did. This is a fairly regular occurrence for them I think. He also leaves them selected small animal organs.

I really only see him when he's passed out on the sofa snoring like an old man. You really wouldn't believe it to see him.

Boredveryverybored · 29/05/2007 19:43

Sounds perfectly normal to me, if she's always been a bit of a hunter she's probably just getting better at it
some cats don't hunt, my last one really couldn't be botehred trying to catch anything, I'd have the hamster roaming round in its ball and she never even looked at it never mind try and catch it!
They're all different, be proud of your clever hunter (could save you a fortune in cat food too lol)

Band - your sister's gerbils, your brother's rats, your mother's cats. . . what have you got, or did you sister's cats get them?

BandofMothers · 29/05/2007 19:47

He got run over

ahundredtimes · 29/05/2007 19:47

But you know who was driving the car right?

NeverEndingPileOfLaundry · 29/05/2007 19:47

Your cat sounds highly normal I'm afraid Tigi.

Amongst the usual catches of birds and mice, the cats that DH and I have owned (or should that be fed?) have brought home:

Rabbits
Weasels
Budgies (assorted colours)
Freshly carved roast beef
Profiteroles

Our current cat has an obsession with frogs. She doesn't eat those, but they are prone to dessicating in odd places around the house, including one of my walking boots ewwww

BandofMothers · 29/05/2007 19:48

Are you suggesting it was my sisters cat

ahundredtimes · 29/05/2007 19:49

Sorry, that was in bad taste. Will you get another one? My dd wants either a gerbil or a hamster or a guinea pig. I'm resisting but feeling meaner and meaner with every passing month.
Visited some friends last week who have 'Smart Rats'. I think that's what they're called. You can teach them to do tricks.

j20baby · 29/05/2007 19:49

pmsl tub, another cats tail?!

100x, yep, a cooked chicken, and i wouldn't mind, but she didn't even share it with us, she knows we haven't got a cooker at the moment she's only tiny too.

ahundredtimes · 29/05/2007 19:49

Cross posted. Am so relieved to see grinning face, as suddenly felt awful about that joke.

BandofMothers · 29/05/2007 19:50

Mum put some liver out to cook, went to the loo, came back and her cat had half inched it and hidden it. She found it behind a bookcase, or somewhere random.

ahundredtimes · 29/05/2007 19:52

J20s cat has some style though doesn't she? This cat WAITED until it was cooked.

BandofMothers · 29/05/2007 19:53

100X, s'okay. Knew you didn't mean to be mean.
I have an evil SOH anyway.
He was hard work once DD2 came along, so no, not yet, and no it wasn't me driving the car either.

Might let them get a hamster or something when they're bigger.

ahundredtimes · 29/05/2007 19:57

Phew. Okay (VVV gave me an immunity pass to wave last night, for when I get out of my depth or cause offence but wasn't planning on having to use it so soon).

Do people have pets as a good way to teach children about death?

tigi · 29/05/2007 19:59

The best thing is that when I but cat food in a multi box i end up throwing the 'rabbit' one away - she won't eat them!

Pets probably are a good way of teaching LOs about death, but that's not why we have our pets. We just really like having cats about the house!

BandofMothers · 29/05/2007 20:04

PMSL tigi.

100X, what's that about offending people, not me

Are you new then. Thought I'd have remembered your name if I'd seen you before.

BandofMothers · 29/05/2007 20:07

I adored my cats in the US, but had to leave them. 6 mth quarentine. But have had bad luck here. Gave my mum one of my cats, not the killer one, cos was never home, and then My one that was run over was so much work, tho quite good really, when dd2 turned up. I found him a lovely home that he liked with 3 people there to fuss him, which I had no time for, and 2 other cats he got on well with. He was there 2 wks and got run over. After surviving on a main road for a year with me.

persephonesnape · 29/05/2007 21:13

it could be an age thing as well - my 18 month old cat hunts and kills and gifts everything ( including a slice of black pudding) my seven year old cat has been there done that and finds it all rather tedious nowdays...

ahundredtimes · 29/05/2007 21:52

Your older cat is very sophisticated, non? Your younger cat should get together with the one below who nabbed a cooked chicken. They could open a restaurant together.

j20baby · 30/05/2007 09:08
Grin
persephonesnape · 30/05/2007 09:26

i will now spend the rest of the morning trying to come up with a name for a restaurant run by cats.

peggotty · 30/05/2007 09:32

Tigi, make sure you keep your cat up to date with worming as I think they can catch worms if they are killing AND eating wild animals!

One of mine brought home a string of sausages once, it was like something out of a cartoon - I expected a woman in rollers to come racing after him waving a rolling pin!

iota · 30/05/2007 09:42

my cat left a dead kestrel on our patio once ( proud emoticon) - they have very big talons

I have also seen him stalking the neighbour's yorkshire terrier
