we rehomed our lhasa apso with the rescue last friday.
All last week DS was distraught, when we left the dog he went ballistic so we took him for a walk and an ice cream along the front and what should we see coming towards us?
an elderly couple with not one but five lhasa apso,s all looking like ours.
He went hysterical, me and DH had to hold on to him, he was kicking and punching.
on the way home we had to stop twice cos he was thrashing about in the back of the car, i knew he would take this bad cos he,s ASD and very very attached to the dog but i didnt realise how much.
He,s not stopped crying, cut off from seeing his friends, wants to stay in bed all day, just like he was when he came out of school.
I dont know what to do, i phoned the rescue up and the dog is still there and they havent rehomed him but i have to think of DD.
The lady at rescue said from our description of how the dog was behaving was that he was "protecting" dd as he knew she was different, he was very possesive over her, growled if anyone went near her and pinched all her toys,
we cant have him being like that but DS keeps crying "train him train him" i honestly dont know what to do for the best, i cant stand seeing DS like this.

Why did you get rid of the dog? Have you tried intensive training? I haven't got any knowledge of that breed, but have you exhausted all avenues?

train him, train him, train him. your poor ds. i bet it feels like he's lost his best friend. Can the dog not stay where he is for the mo, you do family visits, and meanwhile you sort training out for him.

jenk1 · 29/05/2007 13:54

we took him to puppy training, but that was with other groups.
the trainer does home visits so we could get him to come to our house.

we got rid of him because of the way he was behaving around dd, she couldnt have anything ie toys, dolls, he pinched them off her and he didnt like anyone going near her.
she has CP and possible ASD and the lady said that this dog is very sensitive to children with special needs and he wasnt being naughty he was protecting her.

I'd be tempted to do intensive home training, truly

DH phoned the dog rescue lady and told her how depressed ds has become and we would like to take the dog back.
she said

"of course you can"

so we are on our own little "rescue mission" asDS calls it tomorrow!!!!!

ive been in touch with a local dog trainer who is going to come to our house and show us how to train him as we havent a clue!!!!!

at least the tears have stopped.

Awww jenk

I read your thread when you were thinking of rehoming.

I really hope things go ok. I'm sure the training will work wonders, especially if its done at home.

Sixer · 30/05/2007 09:42

brilliant news, may you all live as one happy doggy family. Good luck
