'Female dogs and cats can also be given injections that will temporarily stop them coming into season or stop their season should it start, and regular injections are needed to stop the animal coming back into season. The benefit of this "contraceptive" injection is that once the injections stop, the animal will still be able to breed and reproduce. However there are also considerable risks associated with this injections and so you will need to talk to your vet about whether it is the right method of breeding management for your female dog or cat.'

found that one one site which doesn't sound promising.

Hi

I cant remember what its called but i used to use it about 10/12 years ago you get jabbed every 90 days but i didnt have a period for just over 2 years which worried me a bit , so not great if you want a family anytime soon.
A friend of mine also used to have it and she had terrible mood swings for about 2 weeks before and after the jab.
But hay its like the pill its not going to suit everyone.

www.biltonvets.co.uk/Advice_Neutering.htm

some interesting info here too: sequoiahumane.org/articles/1-07/acc-d.htm

everything i'm reading suggests the few drugs that are available are untested and/or dangerous

missboo · 28/05/2007 21:07

What a twat think i read the thread to quick didnt see the cat bit sorry, at least its might have given you a laugh.

Do you want your cat to have this injection cos you want to breed from her in the future, or just cos you don't want to get her spayed?

IME (am a vetnurse), we would always try to persuade against it, as just some of the side effects are : malignant mammary tumours, womb infections (the only cure for which is spaying anyway) and ovarian/uterine cancers. Milder side effects can include fur loss, behavioural changes & weight gain.

interesting caspercat - yes we'd like her to have a litter. the vet said that there were side effects but they were very rare - and in fact he'd never seen any. does your vet not give the injection then?

We will really try not to give the injection if at all possible. Most people when given the facts decide not to go ahead. It's true that the side effects aren't that common, but of all of them, the mammary cancers we see enough for it to be an issue. And cat mammary tumours are almost always malignant. However, obviously in certain cases it is the better option than unwanted litters, and if only used ONCE is unlikely to cause side effects in the long run.

Also, if your vet offers you a tablet called Ovarid instead, this drug is much much worse than the injection, so in that case i would choose the injection.

Speaking as a vet I can honestly say I have never seen side effects either - because it is given so rarely though that I personally have never used it in cats in 12 years! Seriously I wouldn't touch the stuff for your pet if I were you. If you want her to have a litter keep her indoors/away from males until you want the litter. Better still look at why you want the litter and decide if this is really in her best interests or yours? Think seriously about spaying - it is a very simple straightforward procedure.

Diplidophus · 30/05/2007 13:11

Would suggest you go for a human one - homrone levels won't b high enough otherwise

hatwoman · 30/05/2007 18:25

beautifulgirls - keeping her indoors is of course a possibility, but the problem is her calling! it's sending her wild. she's as loud as a barking dog and I'm not convinced she's at all happy. maybe you're right that we should just get her spayed. our vet is reasonably happy with the injection though. it would only be once, if that makes any difference

Personal choice at the end of the day really. I wouldn't but that is my choice based upon my knowledge.

wannaBe · 31/05/2007 12:56

why do you want her to have a litter? I can understand the appeal of kittens, but the rescue centres are full of unwanted cats as it is without bringing more into the equasion. Unless she's a pedigree who you want to breed to continue a blood line, I would get her spayed and look to adopt a kitten from a rescue centre if it's kittens you want.

Oh and your cat won't know any different if she doesn't have a litter of kittens.
