Can you recomend a good (dog) wormer?

Last time I went to the vet he told me the wormer sold in supermarkets was rubbish (Dr something or other's). Can someone recomend a wormer that actually works (and doesn't cost the earth).
Thanks

Is it Drontal that the supermarkets sell?

He might have just said the supermarkets ones were rubbish so that you buy the surgeries Which is expensive!

Drontal. From the vets only I'm afraid and probably not mega cheap. But very good. We only worm our dog every 3-4 months despite recommendation on the box being every 2. So far, so good (she is 8 and another dog had 5 worm-free years. Then died. )

Supermakerts/pet shops are not licensed to sell anything too strong, so the flea/worm treatment wont be strong enough to kill 100%. Drontal or milbemax are the stongest, milbemax is cheeper and you need to give less tablets for larger dogs. (It has a larger weight range than drontal. Milbemax also breaks down the worms inside the animal so you dont see them passed whole unlike drontal.

Our vet prescribed a monthly tablet that stops worms and fleas, I can't remember the name though - we haven't had either whilst he's been on them so they seem to work I'd ask the vet.

Drontal. I've never tried but you can probably buy it cheaper online.

That's helpful, Jodie. THanks

I buy drontal online works out under two quid a tablet and we have never had worms just google pet pharmacy and you should get a few some are cheaper than others you can get all nonprescription items from them

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 28/05/2007 13:29

Drontal online from here

Or I buy it from Beeston Animal Health as I get in bulk with horse & chicken wormers too.

Has to the Drontal. My springer eats all sorts of rubbish and unpleasant items when out and about and has never had worms.

Am now beginning to doubt myself. Maybe it was the flea stuff he said was rubbish, or maybe as I suspect, he just wanted to charge me lots of money. Tis a new vet, and southern prices, but £15 seemed a lot to me. Will try finding drontal online.

WriggleJiggle - my vet charges me £12 for 6 month's supply (taken every 3 months), and we're in the south.

Macdog · 29/05/2007 19:21

I'm with Speccy.
Definitely Drontal from Bestpet pharmacy.
It's the same one my vet gives my dog, but you get it much cheaper online

jodie1984 · 30/05/2007 14:08

As I said before, any Flea/worm treatment brought from a supermaket will NOT kill 100%, they are not licensed. I am not saying this to make you spend more money but it is fact. The reason why the stuff from yoiur vets costs more is because it is better, and it goes on the animals weight. so if you have a great dane it will cost more than a yorkie.

Some smaller vet's cant afford to keep 'dead stock' and so only order what they will sell in a week.
Vets get slatted a lot for their prices being high, I used to do it. A lot of people dont realise how much they do and how much stuff costs them.
I am not having a go, I just dont like people slagging them off for there prices when they don't give a thought of what they actually do.
Yes the internet are cheaper, they call sell to all of the UK and must go through them like no tomorrow, so they 'should' buy in bulk and it will be less expensive.
Sorry if I have effended anyone
