Need to find a new home for our dog

we have a lhasa apso dog, he,s about 20 months old, he,s a really lovely dog but in our house he doesnt get much attention because of DS and DD both having SN, when he barks they both get upset cos they cant stand the noise and we end up shouting at him which is not fair on him.

we are looking for a new owner/home for him but dont know how to go about it.
I have had a look on the RSPCA website but i cant see anything about them taking dogs to rehome.

can anyone give advice who may have been in this situation before?

TIA

NCDL national canine dogs legue ( i think) never put a dog down.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 20/05/2007 18:50

dogs trust never put a healthy dog down.

Awww jenk

I rehomed a chihuahua from a mumsnetter in March. If I hadnt of taken her I would have had your lovely dog.

Call the usual animal centres, PDSA, RSPCA, Blue Cross etc.
Theres nothing stopping you advertising her and asking to see the new home she would be going to. At least that way you would have peace of mind that she was ok.

I just sold our Jack Russell, I put an advert in the window for £200 and he was gone within 3 hours!

WednesdayAdams · 20/05/2007 19:06

a bit naughty to get rid of your dog for money!

Is your dog going to the right home or you give it away to whoever gave you the most dosh?

I would feel very bad making money of a poor little animal!

Hilllary · 20/05/2007 19:07

Why? You bought it!

Tortington · 20/05/2007 19:07

gotta say i think that if someone is willing to pay a lotta dosh then they are more likley to look after it them any old phleb comming for free puppies - for eg.

WednesdayAdams · 20/05/2007 19:10

I'd rather reassure myself he is going to a lovely home and make sure I would see the house where he was going to be living.

That's my view!

Hilllary · 20/05/2007 19:17

I wouldnt give my dog to just anyone obviously I'd vet them first! Im not heartless.

McBeasty · 20/05/2007 20:28

I'm in a similar situation. I've got a staffy x & a border collie I'm probably going to rehome. My staffy x would go to my aunts and i was going to contact specific Border Collie rescues to help rehome my BC (I already know of one that might be able to help). Here is a link to The Dog Rescue website which might be able to help you. They have a forum for people wanting to rehome their dog as well as people looking for a dog. Also they have a page which'll give you the names and contact details of specific breed rescues: www.dogpages.org.uk/index.htm
Hope it helps.

i cant bring myself to sell him, i feel so gutted that he,s got to go, i know we would probably be able to get a couple of hundred quid for him and i dont call anyone who does sell their dog cos every one is different.
DH i think would rather we sold him but i cant.
i will try the canine dogs league and the dogs trust cos im sure they will send him to a healthy home.
thanks for the info everyone, will let you know how we go on.

We would offer to home him, and be willing to pay you to show our commitment but we ahve just introduced two cats to the house and don't think our springer would be impressed by another four legged arrival.

I feel for you- what a hard decision We already have 2 dogs and I would love a 3rd but my husband would KILL me!! We got both ours from the dogs trust, and they really do put the dogs welfare before the prospective owners - they definately are not just out to rehome the dogs, they want it to be a good match. We saw one dog we loved, and they wouldn't even let us see him out of the kennel because the dod did not like kids. Just be very honest on the form they give you to fill out- ie if he is not good with kids, say otherwise it may result in him being rehomed more than once. By the way, are you in the South? My friends mum is desperate for a dog, but cannot pay for one...? Good Luck

Did you get your dog from a breeder? You will probably find there is a clause in the contract saying that if you ever had to get rid of it you had to return it to them. Don't worry, they will not hold it against you, rather, be grateful that you are doing the right thing by your dog.

Is there a Lhaso Apso owners site on the internet? They may be able to help.

DH phoned lhasaapso rescue and the lady said she would have him, so he,s going this week, probably friday.

she said they vet the new owners very carefully, im sure he will be a lot happier in a non-ASD household.

thanks to whoever provided the link

so sorry about this Jenk. i would have loved to have had him but dsd's has real bad excema so can't have another dog.

The rescue people will make sure he goes to afab home xx

appledumpling · 22/05/2007 12:24

So sorry Jenk .

def try Dogs Trust, 2 of our dogs came from them.

The RSPCA will only keep a dog for a set length of time before putting it to sleep (that's what we were told by Dogs Trust but it was several years ago).

Bit late but I had to rehome our Westie when we found out that dd1 was allergic. She was 4 at them time (dog, not dd) and I contacted the breeder who said she always had a waiting list of people who wanted older dogs.

She went to a retired couple, who were particularly pleased as they knew she was good with children. Apparently went everywhere with them & ended up totally spoilt! We weren't allowed contacts with the rehomers (something in their rules apparently) but breeder gave us regular reports for about 12 months (tailed off eventually).

Did lose a lot of money (she was ped & papered so could have sold her for breeding for about £300) but had satisfaction of knowing she went to a lovely home.
